Algebra 150 Unit Evaluate Expressions Lesson Plan 2
Algebra 150 Unit: Evaluate Expressions Lesson Plan #2: Use PEMDAS to solve equations that include negative and positive numbers & exponents Objective SWBT apply PEMDAS (order of operations) to solve one-step equations without exponents.
Algebra 150 Unit: Solve Equations with 1 Variable Lesson Plan #2: Use PEMDAS to simplify expressions that include negative and positive numbers & exponents • • • Agenda Do Now Discuss Do Now Vocabulary Review exponents Review Order of Operations
DO NOW An easy way to remember order of operation is with the acronym PEMDAS. What do the letters in PEMDAS stand for? P= E= M= D= A= S=
Vocabulary • Equation - statement that the values of two mathematical expressions are equal (indicated by the sign =) • Expression - Numbers, symbols and operators (such as + and ×) grouped together that show the value of something. Example: 2× 3 is an expression • Negative and non-negative numbers - A negative number is a number that is less than zero, such as − 3. A positive number is a number that is greater than zero, such as 3. Zero itself is neither positive nor negative. • Exponent - The exponent of a number says how many times to multiply that itself. It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number. • Variable - A symbol for a number we don't know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y. Example: in x + 2 = 6, x is the variable. • Constant - A fixed value. In Algebra, a constant is a number on its own. Example: in x + 5 = 9, 5 and 9 areconstants. If it is not a constant it is called a variable.
