Alfred Nobel’s childhood • Alfred was born on October 21 st 1883 in Stockholm, Sweden. • All the men in his family were engineers and businessmen. • In 1842, Nobel and his family moved to St. Petersburg where his father started a factory for explosives. • Alfred mastered 4 foreign languages at a young age because his father manufactured land mines for the Tsar’s army.
Work and Discoveries • In 1850 he started studying chemical engineering. • Alfred spent more time with explosives. Specifically a compound called nitro-glycerin (highly unstable explosive). • His brother Emil was killed by an explosion dealing with the substance nitro-glycerin. • Alfred later then added a substance called silica to nitroglycerin which made the compound safer and easier to use. • In 1867 he called his discovery dynamite. • C 3 H 5 N 3 O 9 is the equation for nitro-glycerin
Achievements • Dynamite made him one of the most famous chemists in history. • Dynamite was used for building roads and cutting canals. • He made other explosives which was recognized all around the world. • Created the Bofors arms factory which brought in ironworks.
