WHAT IS THE AUTEUR THEORY • The auteur theory is a theory created to describe that the director within the film making process is the main major creative force • This theory was made in 1940 s France as a way of breaking away from the normal hollywood style of film making. • This term came from cinematic theories from André Bazin and Alexandre Astruc.

His specific way of creating films led to him gaining the name The Master Of Suspense. • In his life as a director and producer he had a very long line of films to his name stretching from 1926 -1972. • Some of his most famous films would be The birds, Rear Window and Pyscho.

This allows Hitchcock to bring his audience on a journey into his films. • Quick shot changes is another way that Hitchcock builds suspense and action in his films. • Changing light in certain moments in the film is another way that Hitchcock creates mood in his films. • The use of music throughout his films makes the films flow with ease and also adds a dramatic effect to the film especially in his film birds.

Murnau was one of Hitchcock's earliest and greatest inspirations Murnau’s approach to story telling through pure visualization really inspired Hitchcock. • Sergei Eisenstein is another inspiration of Hitchcock's as his use of crosscuts in films his that can be famously seen in To Catch a Thief. Using this technique was Hitchcock’s way of paying homage to Eisenstein's use of montage. • Fritz Lang's films also inspired hitchcock as it is known that he visted his film sets during productions allowed Hitchcock to soak up his knowledge and use it in his films.

WHAT MAKES HITCHCOCK AN AUTEUR • The combined techniques that he uses in his films allows Hitchcock to have his own style and his own way of film making. • Hitchcock was one of the first directors to take a cinematic leap into the horror and thriller genre. • Almost within minutes of watching a film from Hitchcock without being told it’s a production with his name to it you can almost guess right away that it is his film just going on the techniques and style of the film. • These points combined really show that we were blessed to be graced with the presence of Hitchcock's films and that he is truly a film auteur.
