Alexandre Cabanel nasceu em Montpellier, em 28 de setembro de 1823. Foi um pintor francês, representante do Neoclassicismo Acadêmico. Dedicou se a assuntos históricos, mitológicos e religiosos. Foi também autor de retratos, paisagens e composições decorativas, além de um excelente aquarelista. Em 1840 ingressou na “École des Beaux Arts”, onde foi aluno de Picot. Em 1845 ganhou o “Prix de Rome”, uma bolsa para estudantes de Arte. Cabanel apresentou se várias vezes no “Salon” tendo sido premiado com uma medalha de segunda classe em 1852, uma de primeira em 1855 e com a medalha de honra em 1865 e 1867. Em 1864 foi nomeado professor na “École des Beaux Arts ”, onde ensinou até sua morte. Amigo de Napoleão III recebeu a incumbência de pintar importantes obras para decoração dos palácios imperiais. Biography: Alexandre Cabanel was born in Montpellier on September 28, 1823. He was a French painter, a representative of the Academic Neoclassicism. He devoted himself to historical, mythological and religious themes. He was also an author of portraits , landscapes and decorative compositions, besides an excellent watercolorist. In 1840 he joined the “École des Beaux Arts”, where he was a pupil of Picot. In 1845 he won the “Prix de Rome”, a scholarship for Art students. Cabanel exhibited many times at the “Salon”, where he was awarded a second class medal in 1852, a first medal in 1855 and the Medal of Honor in 1865 and in 1867. In 1864 he was appointed professor at the “École des Beaux Arts , where he taught until his death. Friend of Napoleon III, Cabanel received a commission to paint important works for the decoration of Imperial Palaces. He died in Paris on January 23 rd, 1889. Olivia Peyton Murray Cutting, 1887
