Alexander the Great MAIN IDEA - Alexander the Great built a huge empire and helped spread Greek culture into Egypt and Asia.
Peloponnesian War • Between 431 -404 BC, much of Greece was at war – Athens vs. Sparta – Other city-states joined sides • Why were they fighting? – Sparta thought Athens was becoming too powerful – Each city-state wanted to control land trade – Trade = Wealth and power
Greece – After the War Sparta won the war and controlled all of Greece for 30 years Led to more fighting between the citystates, weakening Greece and leaving it open to attack
Philip II of Macedonia • Eventually, a new leader emerged – King Philip II of Macedonia conquered all of Greece by 338 B. C. – Wanted to conquer the Persian Empire next

Phalanx • Phillip II was a brilliant military leader • Borrowed and improved on many Greek battle strategies, such as the phalanx – a group of warriors standing together in a square formation with long spears 15 -18 foot spears!
Who was Alexander? • He was the son of Philip II • He was taught by Aristotle (the most famous Greek philosopher) • He became king at age 21 when Philip II was assassinated • He built a huge empire and is known as one of the greatest conquerors in history
Alexander’s Conquests • First attacked Persia in 334 BC – Defeats them in battle after battle • Welcomed in Egypt and declared pharaoh • Became ruler of what had been the Persian Empire • Wanted to conquer India as well, but his exhausted soldiers refused to keep fighting

Alexander Spread Greek Culture • Built the largest empire the world had ever seen • Encouraged the spread of Greek culture (language, art, literature, architecture)
• Built new cities modeled after cities in Greece – Named many of them Alexandria after himself • Encouraged people to keep their own customs, blending their old traditions with Greek ones – Hellenistic, or Greek-like
