Alda Merini was born in Milan on March 21 st 1931. She is considered one of the greatest Italian poet and writers of the twentieth century.

With the help of Giacinto Spagnoletti, at the age of 15, she made her debut as a writer; Spagnoletti himself will publish in 1950 her poems “Luce” and “Il gobbo” in the anthology Italian poetry 1909 - 1949.

Of the same period is the friendship with Salvatore Quasimodo. In 1953 she published “The presence of Orpheus”, in 1955 “Roman Wedding” and “Fear of God”, the birth year of her first son, born from the marriage with Ettore Carniti.

In 1961 she published “You are Peter”, and she begins a long troubled period, burdened with her internment in a mental hospital. We must wait 1979 to see Merini reappear in the Italian intellectual landscape.

Now it will be her experience in the mental asylum to be subtended in her productions; just this new literary phase will attract the attention of the poet Michele Pierri, with whom she will marry, widowed Carniti in 1981.

This is the phase of “La gazza ladra” (1985). Interned in Taranto, where she lived, she returned to Milan, under the care of Dr. Marcella Rizzo, to whom she dedicated some of her works: she published “The Other Truth”, “Diary of a different”, “White sheets”, “Testament”.

The Navigli period is one of the most productive for the writer: Delirio amoroso (1989) and Tormento delle figura (1990) are written. Her authority as a writer grows enormously in these years; fame passes through the words of Alda Merini, Vuoto d'amore, Ipotenusa d'amore until the awarding of the Librex - Guggenheim "Eugenio Montale" prize for poetry in 1993.

Her production does not stop and with the year 2000 the production of Merini becomes rich in mystical elements. In 2004 she writes Clinic of Abandonment: the divided work is in two parts Heroic poems and Clinic of abandonment; in the same year the album Milva canta Merini. Of the 2005 collection is Le briglie d'oro (Poesie per Marina 19842004), while in 2006 she writes the noir novel entitled La nera novella. She dies in November 2009.
