Why Do Some Teens Use Alcohol? Studies show that most teens do not use alcohol. Then why do some teens try alcohol, even when they know it is harmful to their health and is also illegal? • • Curiosity? It will make you more popular? It will make you feel more relaxed or grown-up? It will help you feel relief from confusing or painful emotions that you do not know how to handle?
Why Do Some Teens Use Alcohol? Alcohol in the Media TV commercials, movies, shows…all show actors using alcohol, and is often made to look fun and exciting. Think back to a commercial, or advertisement for alcohol: • Actors / models are young and attractive • They want you to think drinking alcohol is OK • They want you to think that by drinking alcohol, you will have fun and excitement in your lives, just like the people in the ads.
Why Do Some Teens Use Alcohol? Peer Pressure One of the main reasons why some teens use alcohol. • Some teens may choose to drink in order to fit in or not be embarrassed Binge Drinking: the consumption of several alcoholic drinks in a short period of time. Binge drinking is very dangerous! It can cause the body’s systems to fail…it could make your heart rate fall to a dangerously low level…it could cause death.
Why Is Alcohol Harmful to Teens? You know that alcohol can be harmful to anyone. However, it is especially harmful to teens. Teens have to deal with many issues: • Pressure to succeed • Pressure to fit in with others • Have to learn how to handle strong emotions When teens use alcohol to deal with there issues, it only makes handling them harder. • Can damage a teen’s physical health • Can lead to trouble with the law
Why Is Alcohol Harmful to Teens? 1. Teens are still growing • Bodies are still growing…brains are still developing 2. Alcohol can affect emotions • Teen years = many emotional changes • Teens have trouble dealing with their emotions…not easy to handle anger, sadness, boredom, etc. • Drinking does not relieve stress…use stress management techniques!

Underage Drinking is Illegal • Alcohol use is illegal for minors Minor: a person under the age of adult rights and responsibilities. • Buying or possessing alcohol = arrested and fined • DWI = lose your license • Using alcohol = more likely to use other drugs *In many states, teens will lose the privilege to get a license until he or she is 18 or older.
