Giggs & Drake
Representation The photographic image and picture album covers of UK Grime rapper Giggs with his album ‘Let Em Ave It’ and Hip Hop star Drake with his new album ‘Take Care’. Both artists respectively have different styles of music, which is shown visually through their album cover. The image also represents the mood and the persona of their music and their public image.
Analysis on Giggs ‘Let em ave it’ This mix tape represents the frustration and raps about life in Peckham, South London. The album cover shows a monster like figure and symbolises the protagonist. He is the leading figure rising up against authority. When we think about who has power and authority, its usually judges the Police which we see in the picture, and when we think of rebelling, we think of cult figures like Che Guevara. This applies also to the Marxist theory, with the people in the background who look like they’re protesting against powers that be. The two tower blocks represents that the people are from the working class area. Tower blocks and estates in London particurly South London is represented in the Media as dangerous and has high crime rate. The words ‘Let em ave it’ is spelt exactly how it sounds in a London Dialect which adds persona and character.
Analysis on Drake ‘Take Care’ However Drake’s album as well as his cover visually represents something completely different despite it perhaps targeting the same audience (16 -25). With the props that are used in his cover with theme of all Gold, this represents wealth and class. When we think of Art portraits, we imagine them to be very valuable and expensive and perhaps this is what Drake is trying to send out to the mass audience, that he is in fact high value and in demand as well as wealthy in which he portrays in his tracks and music video ‘Headlines’. Furthermore, the image represents Drake as a lonely figure.
