Active Response • • Each person needs to be prepared to take actions to protect him/herself and nearby students if there is an attack Is barricading the door the best option? Is evacuation the best option? – Consider what is known about the attacker’s location compared to the staff member’s. If the attacker enters a sheltered or surprised location, countering the attack might be the only possible response. – Can defensive weapons be improvised? • • • Sports equipment Fire extinguisher Student desks – Give others the opportunity to escape. – If the attacker leaves, do not give chase. – If the attacker is disarmed, secure and protect the weapon but DO NOT brandish it. – Nothing in this advice suggests pursuing, looking for, or “hunting” an attacker. Countering is only used if the attacker is an immediate threat to a secured or unprepared location.
