ALANA Who, what, where, when, and why!
ALANA § The SUNY Oswego ALANA (African, Latino, Asian and Native American communities) Student Leadership Conference began 30 years ago as the Multicultural Student Leadership Conference. It was founded by Tyrone Holmes, the former Assistant Director of the Hewitt Union and Howard Gordon, the Executive Assistant to the President.
ALANA § The ALANA Student Leadership Conference promotes a multicultural environment at SUNY Oswego, which will allow all members of the campus community as well as those from other colleges and universities to interact positively in an atmosphere of mutual consideration and understanding.
§ African Student Organization (ASO), founded in the spring of 2004 by a group of young students under the leadership of Grace Mukupa. ASO was founded to promote unity, cooperation, social, cultural and educational aspirations among African students on the Oswego State campus.
§ Black Student Union (BSU), founded in 1968. The founders of the Black Student Union felt there was a lack of awareness of Black culture both home and abroad. The Black Student Union has the opportunity to educate as well as entertain the Oswego community.
§ Latino Student Union (LSU), founded in 1968. LSU is meant to be a vehicle for expression of Latin American culture and its European, African and indigenous influences as seen in the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America and South America. While these areas share much of their heritage, each has its own unique identity.
§ Asian Student Association (ASA), founded in 1991. ASA strives to preserve the Asian traditions, promote awareness, and enlighten others about the Asian culture through contributions from all members. ASA is a place for sharing an exchange of experiences and ideas within the Asian culture.
§ Caribbean Student Association (CSA), founded in 1991. The purpose of CSA is to promote and strengthen cultural ties among Oswego students and the greater Oswego community. CSA looks to foster understanding of issues facing the Caribbean community.
§ Native American Heritage Association (NAHA), promotes and raises awareness of Native American culture. Members discuss contemporary issues through workshops and events as well as provide support. NAHA hopes to create a vibrant Native community at Oswego.
§ The ability to become a leader within a multicultural environment has become increasingly important in today’s world. The ALANA conference is comprised of workshops, educational presentations and inspirational speakers, all with the objective of uniting the ALANA population.
§ Leadership workshops, keynote speakers, talent shows, dance, games, diversity, respect, social interaction and networking are just some of the highlights you can expect from this conference. Student leaders, faculty, and professional staff members and volunteers all help to facilitate these events making it one of the most unique conferences at SUNY Oswego.
§ Continue the implementation of a comprehensive developmental, educational and recreational leadership/diversity conference. § Help create, develop, and maintain a cultural environment that allows ALANA students and staff to interact positively in an atmosphere of mutual consideration and understanding of one another’s differences and unique characteristics. § Promote and enhance the campus environment by actively encouraging and structuring the interaction of ALANA students and staff.
§ Develop your leadership skills. § Acquire a stronger understanding of ALANA cultures. § Access unique networking opportunities within campus, the Oswego community, alumni engagement.
