FROM EGOISM TO ECOISM
FROM EGOISM TO ECOISM In recent years, we see that the biggest threat to our world is the deterioration of the ecological balance. European or Asian, white or black, rich or poor people are waiting for the same grave end. Unfortunately, while pursuing the ambitions and dreams, human beings neglect and even harm their natural environment, which is the real habitat of them. The power to change this sad end is still in the hands of people. In this context, the main objectives of our multicultural project are to make our students ready to think and act in this field, to raise awareness about nature and environmental problems, to make a division of labor in the protection of our common home "The Earth" in communication with people in different countries, to communicate in English language, to work on recycling and waste management. In order to achieve our goals, we will collaborate with at least 5 different branch teachers from each partner school and plan workshops for our project topic.
OUR FIRST WORKSHOP AN INTEGRATED SESSION (MATHS-ENGLISH) We integrated two disciplines Maths and English under theme of ecology.
PROBLEM: The Earth is becoming a thirsty planet. Our country will be water poor in 30 years. People suffer from the lack of water supplies. So; Are we are of the importance of water supplies on the Earth? How much knowledge do we have about it? Maths: Our Maths teacher and steudents made an experiment when they realised that one of the faucet in our school was leaking. They saved the water wasted in a pot for 24 hours and they determined that 8 litres of water was saved in one day. After this result; they made problems; It is called " a drop of water" 1)If we waste 8 litres of water per day from that leaking faucet, how much water do we waste per week/month/year? 2)If we had not wasted the water so much, how many people could have made use of it to fulfil their drink need per day/week/month/year? (2 litres person)
Session: - It was a group work activity with 15 students. They made groups of 3 -4. Before moving to the problem solving we watched a striking video about water storage throughout the Earth. we gathered ideas about the videos in English. -Our Maths teacher anounced the problem anda gave info about it. Problems were solved by students in the given time. The answers were collected and written on the board. The reasults wer striking. After problems solved, we talked about the deductions of pupils. - Finally pupils wrote their ideas in order to save our water, precautions to take etc. Thay stick the results on the board and share their ideas about our theme. RESULT: I t was a fruitful session because we share our ideas with other teachers in our school. Our headmaster Cem TOPAL and Maths teacher DEMET TURAL contributed with their ideas and proffessions to our theme
Workshop 2 (WASTE MANAGEMENT PROCESS) We visited the solid waste sorting facility with our students. We examined the solid waste separation process with a group of students and examined the section that produces electrical energy from our waste. In this event, our chemistry teacher Hatice Ergin supported us. She informed our students about "zero waste" and "sustainable energy". In addition, our environmental engineer told our students how waste management has changed in our city compared to past.
Workshop 3. (MAKING MASKS USING WASTE PAPER) We designed an art event from waste papers with our students. Our Art teacher Fatma Ertaç prepared a workshop to teach ss making masks by using waste papers. Before starting to work, she showed examples from world-famous mask artists and introduced their masterpieces. She then gave information about the anatomical structure of the face and the golden ratio. Then we started the mask work using waste papers. Other products of this workshop, which is a long-term activity, will be shared on our page in the coming days.
ZERO WASTE WORKSHOP 4: WRITE AN ACROSTIC POEM SUSTAINABLE FLORA Zero waste is our duty Earth belongs to all living things Recycle is important Oceans should be also clean Wastes should be recycled Animals heal the people Save the earth Flora is my home Use the waste Look at this perfect nature Stay green Ordinary trees save lives Till the end. Art of the humanity Roses adorn views Always I'd love to stay at my home Save the nature, save the earth Zafer GÜL Is inside you Never lose your faith. Another Earth is nowhere Trees, plants, seas, sky are our habitats Be kind and generous Energy sources should be sustainable. Life is so short for us but, Ayşe Akkuş Earth must survive forever. FATİH ERDEM
Workshop 5 (Making cloth bags using waste clothes) We designed another art and design workshop with our students. Our Literature teacher Hilal Serbes prepared a workshop to teach ss how to make cloth bags using waste materials. In this workshop both students had chance to make sth renewable using their skills and hand craft both they learnt how waste materials are used in many ways. We first started a month long campaign to collect waste clothes around the school and we had a very big storage. Later on we chose the clothes which could be renewable and sorted out them to sew bags and other things. Plus, we picked some cloth to make yarn. We started make yarn with ours students and had a carpet loom. Our aim is to weave rug/carpet using these yarns. Carpet weaving is a traditional handcraft in Turkey. It is our historical and cultural heritage. For this reason our literature teacher prepared a small presentation about the history of weaving carpet in Anatolia. We watched some videos and started the task. In this task, other colleagues and students also have contributed the task.
