Airline Case Study Template Objective Provide a forum
Airline Case Study Template • Objective: – Provide a forum to discuss real-world operational problems and work together to identify underlying NAS systems and related SWIM information services that might contribute operational solutions • Why the template? – Present information related to operational use case in a clear and concise manner, and structure the discussion in a consistent way • Focus areas – Focus on operational issues that might be improved with access to NAS information, and identify ways to access that information • General Guidance: – Use your own company templates, using the following to organize content – You can deviate from the template outline to tailor for your operational story – In developing content, try to keep the problem definition narrowly focused on the operational improvement sought – Carefully consider information presented and ensure no proprietary information the airline may deem sensitive if released to the public – Feel free to remove names of systems, abstract them as you see fit – Consider developing Exec Summ slide last: helps narrow problem definition SWIM February 8, 2018 Federal Aviation Administration 1
Executive Summary • Environment: – Summary of the situation (area within operations affected, etc. ) – This is intended to help set the stage for the topic to be addressed • Problem statement: – Single statement that concisely defines the nature of the problem – The goal is to narrow the nature of the problem helping to identify the type of NAS systems and decision-making is involved • Impact: – Describe impact to Ops & benefits gained if situation is resolved – Intent: articulate positive outcomes by resolving Ops issues contained – This will likely resonate with operations staff across industry • Goal: – State the desired end-state in the form of a goal statement – Intent is to describe in 1 sentence what you’re trying to achieve – “Improved throughput of traffic transitioning into movement area…” SWIM February 8, 2018 Federal Aviation Administration 2
Case Study Overview • Case study overview – – Maximum 1 to 2 slides Words that elaborate the problem statement & discussion Discussion points as necessary to describe the problem Information here may include relevant business process references involved in executing the operation SWIM February 8, 2018 Federal Aviation Administration 3
Case Study Overview: Graphical Representation • Slide that illustrates the environment & operational systems involved in the case study – 1 to 2 slides containing graphics – Graphics should include operational environment (ie, picture of airport surface area affected, etc. ) – AOC systems view with connection points to 3 rd party partners (ie, vendors, SWIM connection, etc. ) – Abstract the systems shown in graphics to a “generic box”, based on your comfort level with exchanging with industry members SWIM February 8, 2018 Federal Aviation Administration 4
Operational Workflow • Description of the workflow – – – 1 to 2 slides Actors involved in the operation The work being performed This can include process flow charts, etc. How actors achieve their work (ie, references to relevant systems) Associated performance metrics that are affected by the operation SWIM February 8, 2018 Federal Aviation Administration 5
Example: Operational Business Process Workflow Process characterization: Capture current process flow, identifying process owners and tools required to execute it SWIM February 8, 2018 Federal Aviation Administration 6 6
Operational Support Systems • Identification Systems Involved – List of systems involved in the work being performed • Examples include tools used by the Actors in executing the work – Generic system names (internal system, or 3 rd party COTS, etc. ) – Example: airport surface tool, or 3 rd party airport surface viewer SWIM February 8, 2018 Federal Aviation Administration 7
Example: Notional Systems View • Diagram noting relevant systems & subsystems SWIM February 8, 2018 Existing Capabilities Potential Changes Federal Aviation Administration 8 8
Open Discussion Q&A Forum • Questions – These are questions you’d like to ask about the NAS operation – The goal of this discussion is to: • • SWIM February 8, 2018 Generate discussion between the operations folks Identifying the underlying NAS system Identify currently available SWIM information services that might help Engage in discussion on context of data, as it relates to the problem Federal Aviation Administration 9
