What is air pollution? Air pollution refers to the release of pollutants into the air that are detrimental to human health and the planet as a whole.
Nitrogen Dioxide (NO 2) and Particulate Matter (PM) are the two most prevalent types of air pollution! NO 2 (smog), or “ground-level ozone, ” as it is more often called, occurs when emissions from combusting fossil fuels react with sunlight. Soot, or “particulate matter, ” is made up of tiny particles of chemicals, soil, smoke, dust, or allergens, in the form of gas or solids, that are carried in the air.
How big is Particulate Matter?
Short lived climate pollutants (SLCPs)

How does air pollution affect our health? The damage to our health from air pollution can start as early as birth right the way through to old age. It’s estimated that the equivalent of 40, 000 lives are lost each year in the UK and five million across the world due to air pollution.
