Aim: What are guard cells and how do they help plants to perform PHOTOSYNTHESIS? Do Now: Making Observations Look at the leaf and write down your observations.
Agenda • • • Do Now (7 minutes) Lesson/notes (15 minutes) Guard Cell Class Simulation (10 mins) Plant Paragraph and CRQ (20 mins) Exit slip (3 minutes)
Leaves have two important structures: • 1) Stomates- small pores under a leaf that allows carbon dioxide and oxygen to diffuse into and out of the leaf. • Water is also evaporated out of the leaf.
• 2) Guard Cells. Specialized cells surrounding the stomates that controls the opening and closing of stomates. Guard Cells
Under the leaves… • Stomates and guard cells are found under a leaf. • Why do you think this is the case? • This prevents excess evaporation of water on sunny days.
• Teacher should explain that the sun is beating on the leaves of the plant this causes water to be drawn up through the roots, up the stem and water then evaporates out of the leaves.

Guard Cell Class Simulation • Two students will represent the guard cells. • The two students will then hold cards that resemble the guard cells, which move back and forth allowing the stomate to open and close.
• During the day time, the stomate will open allowing CO 2 to go in. • Students holding CO 2 cards will go through the stomates. • Students will give card to teacher who is representing the chloroplast. • Teacher will give them an O 2 card and student will then exit the stomates. • Note* Students with O 2 cards and CO 2 cards will be moving through the stomate at the same time. This represents gas exchange.
• Teacher will then say it’s night time. Students will close the stomate, not allowing gas exchange to occur.
Plant Paragraph
CRQ
CRQ Answers • One function regulated by guard cells is gas exchange. – Others- photosynthesis. • Guard cells carry out this function by controlling the opening and closing of the stomates. • An advantage of having guards cells under the leaf is that it prevents too much water from evaporating.
How can we use better grammar and become better writers? • • • Part I – Matching Match the new vocabulary word with the proper definition. ____ Energy-rich molecule ____ Raw materials ____ Recycle glucose, ATP) • ____ Organelle • ____ Organism a specific function • ____ Convert the ingredients a. to use again, reuse b. a living thing c. a molecule that has a lot of energy (ex. d. to change e. a part of a cell that carries out f. what is necessary to make something,
New and Improved Paragraph • Photosynthesis takes place in an organelle called the chloroplast. Plants convert raw materials into glucose, which is a molecule that has a lot of energy. Organisms that perform photosynthesis produce oxygen which is recycled in nature.
