Aim: How is Deforestation and Direct Harvesting Harmful to Earth’s Ecosystems? DO NOW This is a Columbian parrot. 1. Would you bring it with you, to the U. S. , to have as a pet? Why or why not? 2. Would this parrot suffer, if moved from its original location?
Deforestation • Destroying forests or plowing through meadows Why do this? • Space for apartment buildings, stores, parking lots, farms
Effects of Deforestation • Reduction in Biodiversity organisms killed or will have to migrate or move to another location • Ecosystem & Food Web Disruption, whether it be a forest or a meadow • Increase in the amount of CO 2 being released into the atmosphere • Increases amount of soil erosion & makes soil less fertile • Change of climate : decreased rainfall
Solution to Deforestation • Try not to destroy the habitat (forest or meadow) • Cut down fewer trees • Replant trees that have been cut down
Direct Harvesting • Destroying or removing a species from its habitat Why do this? • Humans exploit wild plants & animals for their products • Using them as pets
Examples • • Elephants or walruses for their ivory tusks Baby Seals for their pelts Tropical rainforest trees for plywood Columbian parrots for pets in U. S. passenger pigeons for hunting purposes Dodo birds for hunting purposes Blue whale for hunting purposes

Effect of Direct Harvesting • Disruption of ecosystems • Endangerment of species (polar bears, giant pandas, blue whales) • Extinction of species (passenger pigeons, dodo birds)
Solution to Direct Harvesting • Do not overhunt, overfish, overtrap • Do not remove animals from their own country & move to another country • Pass laws that protect endangered species

Group Activity In some parts of the world, large areas of forest have been cut down to make way for farms. Q: Why might some countries need to remove large areas of forest in order to provide more farmland? Q: What will happen to the production of oxygen in areas of deforestation?
Individual Activity Trees are often burnt, after being cut down. Q: Which gas does this release into the atmosphere? Q: What effect does the burning of wood have on global warming?
