AIM How do we add and subtract polynomials
AIM: How do we add and subtract polynomials? Do Now: Simplify each expression: 1) 5 g + 34 g 2) 8 x² - x² 3) 2 b – 6 + 9 b HW #1 – Return class contract and Chapter 1 – pg 12 #2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11
New Vocabulary 1) Monomial - An algebraic expression that is the product of constants and variables. 2) Polynomial - The sum or difference of two or more monomials. 3) Binomial/Trinomial - 2 terms/3 terms 4) Degree of a Polynomial – The monomial with the greatest exponent. 5) Standard form of a Polynomial - The degrees of the monomials decrease from left to right
Example 1 – Determine degree and put in standard form 4 y³ - 7 y⁴ + 16 y⁸ - 3 y⁵ + 2 y + 7 +19 y²
POLYNOMIALS 1)Add or subtract the coefficients of “like terms” 2) Make a subtraction problem an addition problem by changing the signs of the second polynomial
Example 2: Find the sum 4 x² + 7 x - 4 and 8 x² - 12 x + 13
Example 3 and 4 – Find the sum 3) 3 t² - 7 t³ - 6 t +15 and 7 t³ + 5 t – 2 t⁴ + 8 4) (¾x² - ⅔x +⅕) and (½x² +⅚x -⅘)
Example 5 – Find the difference between (6 y³ + 4 y² - 5 y +7) and (2 y³ - 9 y² +3 y – 4)
Examples 6 and 7 - Subtract 6) 8 m³ + 3 m – 12 from 7 m⁴ - 2 m³ + 6 m² + 9 7) (⅔y³ + ¼y - ⅞) from (⅓y³ - ½y² + ¼ )
Example 8 : Find the sum of ¾s³ - 5 s² + ⅔s + ½ and 6 s² - ⅓s +½ then subtract ¼s³ - ``` ⅔s + ¾
