Model Paragraph In Of Mice and Men, many characters face the fact that they are being powerless against great forces such as nature, racism money, cruelty and others. Candy is an old man and he was powerless when he had to save his dog. For example, on page 49 the author says, “then he rolled slowly over and faced the wall and lay silent. ” From this one can infer that Candy couldn’t stop his dog’s death because Candy is an old man and no one would listen to him if he were to try and stop. Therefore, in that moment it shows that Candy was powerless against discrimination due to age. Furthermore, in the novella, there is another character who faced powerlessness against racism. For instance, in the text it states, “’Listen, n****r, ’ she said ‘You know what I can do to you if you open your trap? ’ Crooks stared…” In this quote, the author illustrates that when Curley’s wife was treating him for being black, Crook couldn’t stand up for himself and he grew smaller, and he pressed himself against the wall. This shows that Crooks was faced with powerlessness against racism and cruelty. In conclusion, this shows how Candy and Crooks were being powerless against discrimination and racism.

As an illustration in the text on page 68 it reads, “Cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black. ” This illustrates that Crooks was allowed to live in the barn not in the bunkhouse. No one talked and met with him. He was not able to play cards because he was black. He was left alone. Therefore, this describes the feelings of loneliness from the isolated stable buck.

For example, on page 66 -67, the narrator says, “Crooks could leave his things about, and being a stable buck and cripple… he had accumulated more possessions than he could carry on his back. ” From this we can infer that Crooks can even leave his things by itself because no one would even be able to see it. He is isolated from the others because of his skin color even though he could just go out and say a greeting but he is being a coward and unstable of himself from the threat of Curley’s wife.

Model Paragraph At that time, if you had different looks, background or skin color, discrimination may be a problem. In the book, the character Crooks was being lonely because of the color of his skin. For example, in the text it states, “Cause I’m black. They play cards in there, but I can’t play because I’m black. They say I stink. Well, I tell you, all of you stink to me. ” This refers that Crooks was the only one who has black skin on the ranch and he was in solitude and isolated. When Lennie talked to him, he built a wall between them because this reminded him how other workers treated him before. Those experiences become an invisible and tough shell that can protect him. One can say the racism makes Crooks lonely, but Crooks himself also isolated others.
