Aim: How do respiratory diseases disrupt homeostasis? DO NOW 1. Have you ever had a hard time catching your breath? If so, what did it feel like? If not, what do you imagine it would feel like? 2. Why are our lungs so important to us?
Bronchitis • Inflammation of the bronchi • Symptoms – Difficulty breathing – coughing • Causes: – Infection – Irritants, such as cigarette smoke • Effects: – Bronchi inflamed & increased mucus production – Not enough oxygen going to cells
Emphysema • Progressive disease of the lung • Symptoms: – Shortness of breath • Causes: – Smoking is the leading cause – Other risk factors: deficiency of an enzyme & air pollution • Effects: – Air sac (alveoli) spaces are enlarged & destroyed – Mucus in bronchioles – Fewer capillaries
Asthma • Allergic reaction • Symptoms: – Difficulty breathing • Causes: – Combination of environmental and genetic factors – Triggers: pollutants & irritants, infections, airborne allergens • Effects: – Narrowing of the bronchial tubes
