Aim: How do chemicals in our brain and body affect our behavior? Do Now: • Complete Page 7 of packet. Label. Homework: • PAGE 10 of packet - Choose 1 or more NT and create a superhero (amplify or diminish the NT) Create an image.
Page 7 of packet 3 2 6 7 1 4 5 Label (# 1 – 7) the firing of a neuron… – Action potential – Repolarization – Threshold – Resting potential (2) – Depolarization – Hyperpolarization Where would you add Refractory period?
Reuptake • The sending neuron reabsorbs any neurotransmitters left at the synapse • Sends back NT’s
Agonist • Substance that mimics or has a similar effect of a neurotransmitter https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=oe F 6 r. FN 9 org Antagonist • Substance that inhibits the effects of a neurotransmitter
Medications affect communication at the synapse, often by inhibiting or exciting neurons firing. These medications act as agonist or antagonists. Identity as agonist or antagonist: 1. The injection of Botox (botulin) blocks the release of Acetylcholine which smooths wrinkles by paralyzing the underlying facial muscles. 2. Morphine has the same feel good effect as the neurotransmitters and endorphins do because it mimics the effects at the receiving neurons. 3. Prozac blocks the reuptake of Serotonin by sending neurons causing the neurotransmitters to stay in the synaptic gap longer which elevates the person depressed mood.
Hormones vs. neurotransmitters Both secreted in brain and affect our behavior Hormone • released by endocrine glands • Take time to effect behavior • Can be synthesized Neurotransmitter • Released at nerve terminal • Need an impulse to make the neurotransmitter • Can only be made by body
TYPES OF NEUROTRANSMITTERS Task: 1. Read about your NT 2. Fill in Chart and share with your group. 3. Make your skit/improv
Aim: How do chemicals in our brain and body affect our behavior? Do Now: 1. Go over Stats Quiz. Homework: • Finish NT Check for Understanding # 1 – 24 )
Page 8 – 9 Hormones and NT’s 1. Take out Superheroes. Share name, image, powers and how this NT affects behavior. 2. Take notes and fill in chart. 3. Complete check for understanding.
Create a superhero or villian • Choose 1 or more NT or hormone to amplify or diminish to give your hero some “superpower”. • What NT/H? What powers does he/she have? How does it affect their behavior? How is he/she a hero? • Create an image of your superhero. This image should help us remember the function of the NT. • Create a name for your hero.
Neurotransmitter Skits Directions: – In groups create a skit using any 4 -5 of the characters to demonstrate the functions of the Neurotransmitters that you have learned about in this unit. – Design a scenario and write a script (minimum: 20 lines), in which the characters’ personalities and interactions with one another reflect the roles of the associated neurotransmitter. – Each group will be required to perform their skits, and must submit one written script per group.
Acetylcholine (ACH) • Deals with motor movement and memory. • Too much and you will…. • Too little and you will… • Lack of ACH has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease.
Dopamine • Deals with motor movement and alertness. • Lack of dopamine has been linked to Parkinson’s disease. • Too much has been linked to schizophrenia.
Serotonin • Involved in mood control. • Lack of serotonin has been linked to clinical depression.
Endorphins • Involved in pain control. • Many of our most addictive drugs deal with endorphins.
Norepinephrine
GABA
Neurotransmitters and their Functions
Who am I? • TASK: • Use your HW chart to help you identify the neurotransmitter/ hormone. P. 15
Reuptake • The sending neuron reabsorbs any neurotransmitters left at the synapse
Drugs can be…. . • Agonists- make neuron fire • Antagonists- stop neural firing • Reuptake Inhibitors- block reuptake https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=oe F 6 r. FN 9 org
