Legitimacy • People who are being governed believe their leader has the right to lead them. • The justification to rule. • Another way of saying “What gives you the right? ”
How do rulers legitimize their rule? (aka acquire power. Keep power, maintain power)
1. Charismatic Authority • A leader attracts followers because of his/her magnetic personality, heroic military victories, and/or appeals to common emotional ties as race, ethnicity, religion, and common culture. Can you think of charismatic leaders from history?
2. Traditional Authority: • A leader that appeals to the way we have done things in the past. • Hereditary (Blood line) - The eldest son of the king becomes king. Can you think of examples of leaders with traditional authority?
3. Rational-legal Authority: • A leader promises to uphold and enforce the laws that apply to all people. The leader must carefully follow the laws that define his or her role. Such a leader faces the possibility of being removed from office if he/she acts arbitrarily. • Any democratically elected official Can you think of examples of leaders with Rational/legal authority? What countries have rational legal leaders?

Divine Right Theory • God created the state and gave “royalty” the divine right to rule. • King claims to be a representative of God • Use of divine right increases monarchs power. • People had to obey the king because they were chosen by God

Louis XIV Rules France • cancelled the Edict of Nantes, • has a huge royal court • was a patron of the arts, • built a HUGE palace at Versailles • got France involved in many disastrous wars, including the War of the Spanish Succession • Overall Louis made France stronger, but by the time he died, people resent his power and the high taxes in France, leaving France ripe for revolution
