Pen Tool • We have used the pen tool to create drawings. • The pen tool can also be used to make complex selections. • The pen tool is a good tool to use when you are making selections that involve both curves and straight edges • Today we will be making a selection of a flying saucer

Drawing Paths • In order to make a selection using the pen tool we need to create a path around the object you want to select • Once the path is drawn, you can convert the path to a selection • When drawing a freehand path, use as few points as possible to create the shape you want • The fewer points you use, the smoother the curves will be

Drawing the outline of a shape • In this exercise, you are going to use the pen tool to connect the dots from point A to point N, and then back to point A. • You’ll set some straight segments, some smooth curve points, and some corner points • In order to begin we need to configure the pen tool to draw paths

Steps 1. In th e toolbox, select the Pen tool 2. On the tool options bar, select or verify the following settings: a. Select the paths option b. Click the arrow for Geometry Options and make sure that the Rubber Band is not selected c. Make sure that the Auto Add option is selected d. Select the Add to Path Area option 3. Click the Paths tab in the layers palette 4. Zoom in , so you can see the letters. Be sure to reselect the pen tool 5. Position the pointer on point A. Click the point and drag it to its red dot to set the first anchor point and the direction of the first curve. Do the same thing for point B.

Steps 6. At point B, you’ll need to make a corner point to create a sharp transition between the curved segment and the straight one. Alt-click point B to convert the smooth point into a corner point 7. Click point C to set a straight segment (don’t drag) 8. Click point D and drag to its red dot. Do the same for point E 9. Click point F 10. Set curve points at G, H and I by clicking each point and drag to its red dot

Steps 11. Click point M 12. Click point N and do not release the mouse button. Press Alt and drag from point N to the red dot, then release the mouse 13. Move the pointer to point A and click to close the path 14. In the Paths palette, rename the path Saucer 15. Save your work as Saucer. psd in your documents
