AIM: What are moon phases? DO NOW: In page 3 of your packet…number the phases like I did below
IMPORTANT REGENTS QUESTION: WHY DO WE ALWAYS SEE THE SAME SIDE OF THE MOON ? ANSWER: • The Moon’s period of rotation equals its period of revolution • For every 90 o it rotates, it revolves 90 o.
IMPORTANT REGENTS QUESTION: WHY DON’T WE HAVE A SOLAR OR LUNAR ECLIPSE EVERY MONTH? ANSWER: • ITS ORBIT IS INCLINED AT ABOUT 6 DEGREES SO THE EARTH, MOON AND SUN DON’T ALWAYS LINE UP!
Moon Phase Animation
• As the moon is waxing the light is maxing • As the moon is waning the light is draining • Waxing phases: the light grows from the right • Waning phases: the dark grows from the right • Always look to the lighted portion to determine a gibbous or crescent

AIM: Where’s the Moon? ? DO NOW: Mr. Leone walks to school everyday. He always leaves his house at 7: 00 am and passes Mr. Zinke’s house at 7: 20 am. At about 7: 40 am he passes old man Bieler’s house and arrives at school at 8: 00 am sharp. If Mr. Leone leaves for school 20 minutes later today at what time will he pass the 2 houses and arrive at school? ? ?
Moon Rising • The moon generally rises in the east and sets in the west • But…. . because the Earth is rotating at a faster rate than the moon revolves around us……the moon will appear to rise about 50 min. later each day
