AIM: WHY DOES IT RAIN? ? DO NOW: 1. NUMBER THE PAGES OF THE MOISTURE NOTES PACKET PLEASE HW: 1. PRESSURE VARIABLES WIZARD QUIZ DUE TUESDAY AT 8 AM 2. LAB # 25 DUE MONDAY 3. PRESSURE QUESTIONS AND MAP B DUE PD 2 & 7 – FRIDAY 1/31 PD 4 MONDAY 2/3
What is moisture? • Water found in one of its three forms: 1. SOLID (ICE/SNOW) 2. LIQUID (RAIN) 3. GAS (WATER VAPOR)
Which container can hold more soda? WHY? ? ?
Which air mass has more space between its molecules? • Warm air has more space to hold water vapor • Cold air has less space
Why does precipitation occur? • Air can only hold a certain amount of water vapor before it will overfill and condense • This is known as capacity
• Every 10 degree Celsius increase doubles the air’s capacity • Every 10 degree Celsius decrease cuts capacity in half
AIM: WHY DOES IT RAIN PART 2 DO NOW: 1. (PD 2 & 7): TAKE OUT LAB # 24 MAP B AND PLACE IN BLUE BIN 2. GO TO PAGE 24 OF MOISTURE PACKET AND, WITHOUT LOOKING BACK, FILL IN THE BLANKS OF THE TOP TITLED “WHAT DID WE LEARN YESTERDAY? ” HW: CHECK GOOGLE CALENDAR!
PAGE 24 WHAT DID WE LEARN? • The warmer the air mass, the ______________ space between the air molecules. • _______________ is the amount of water vapor that an air mass can hold within the air molecules. • The Sun could __________________ liquid water from oceans and large bodies of water to increase moisture in the air. • A drop in temperature will decrease the air’s ______________ to hold water vapor.
Humidity I am having a bad hair day! • Moisture content of the atmosphere • Relative Humidity – the percentage of moisture in the air.
– 50% relative humidity means that the air is holding half of the water it is capable of holding
– 100% relative humidity is when the air is holding all of the water vapor it can possibly hold – air is fully saturated and probably precipitating
LOOK AT THE 4 AIR MASSES: 1. WHICH ONE CAN HOLD MORE WATER VAPOR? 2. WHICH ONE HAS THE MOST ACTUAL MOISTURE? 3. WHICH ONE IS MORE LIKELY TO PRECIPITATE? PAGE 24
What has to happen to the air temperature for water vapor to change phase and condense into a liquid? • IT MUST COOL!
But…. . how much does it have to cool? ? ? • Air temperature must drop (cool) to the DEWPOINT TEMPERATURE for condensation to occur.
This represents a parcel of air This is moisture 20 °C 10 °C HOW FULL IS IT?
How could this air mass become 100% full? 20 °C Drop its temp! 10 °C
• At this point the air is said to be SATURATED • Relative Humidity is 100% The dew point and relative humidity can be found with an instrument called a sling psychrometer
AIM: WHAT ARE CLOUDS? ? ? DO NOW: 1. ALL CLASSES TAKE OUT LAB # 25 2. PERIOD 4 TAKE OUT LAB # 24 AND PLACE IN BLUE BIN ON MY DESK 3. TURN TO PAGE 6 OF THE MOISTURE NOTES PACKET HW: 1. PRESSURE VARIABLES QUIZ DUE FRIDAY @ 8 AM 2. (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!) READ PAGES 12 -13 IN MOISTURE PACKET. ANSWER QUESTIONS 1 -5 ON PAGE 14.

Fill in the blanks…. . BOTTOM OF PAGE 6 OF MOISTURE PACKET warm Yesterday…. a _____ air mass moved in. This air mass has higher a _______ capacity…. . therefore more it can hold _______ water vapor. During the night temp. dropped _____, capacity decreased _____ and air temp. got closer _____ to dewpoint temp. When the two temps. were equal _____, the air mass is said saturated to be ______
Dew point and R. H. facts to know • Dew point temp. will always be either LOWER or EQUAL to actual air temp. • The bigger the difference, the dryer the air mass • As Dew point increases R. H. increases • As air temp. decreases R. H increases • The WET BULB temp. will always be either LOWER or EQUAL to the dry bulb
What about clouds?
What are clouds? • Large masses of millions of water droplets suspended in air
• Water evaporates from lakes, streams, and oceans and enters into the air
• Transpiration – the loss of water from plants through their leaves • Evapotranspiration – combines evaporation and transpiration
CLOUD FORMATION 1. What motion will warm air have? 2. What happens to air temperature as we increase elevation in the Troposphere? 3. What is happening to the difference between air temp and dew point temp? 4. If the air is full of moisture, what phase change will occur when the air temp and dew point temp are equal?
Steps involved in cloud formation: …. . Warm, MOIST air RISES
…. a drop in air pressure causes…. . …. Expansion and the air Cools TO THE DEWPOINT. . Water vapor then…. .
……. . Condenses on…… …. . Condensation Nuclei (a surface upon which condensation droplets can stick on. Ex: dirt, salt, smoke) ……. . Clouds form!!!
Size comparison between raindrop and condensation nuclei
AIM: REVIEW OF MOISTURE VARIABLES AND PAGE 12 ESRT DO NOW: 1. TURN TO PAGE 12 OF ESRT AND ALSO TURN TO PAGE 14 OF YOUR MOISTURE PACKET HW: 1. REVIEW DUE TUESDAY 2/11 2. COMPLETE QUESTIONS ON PAGES 17 -19 OF MOISTURE PACKET

Cloud Altitudes
Types of precipitation • Rain • Freezing rain • Hail • Snow • Sleet
Hail – moisture that freezes in clouds through accretion
Actual Photo’s of Snowflakes
Freezing rain: snow falls into warmer air…melts…then into cooler air and freezes upon contact with surface
Sleet: formed like freezing rain…. but droplets freeze and bounce off surface
Answer the following questions based on the 3 graphs……. • Describe the relationship between temperature and pressure. • Why does such a relationship exist? • Why does condensation occur mostly at night and evaporation during the day? • Why does relative humidity decrease as temperature increases? • Why does the dewpoint temperature rise during the daylight hours? Why does it decrease at night? • Describe the relationship between temperature and windspeed. • What causes wind? So why this relationship?
• • Warm moist air ________ A drop in air pressure causes ____ This causes the air temp to _____ The air temp will then meet the _______ Then the phase change _______ will occur On _____________ And then ______________ form
