Body Mechanics Body mechanics refers to the way we move our body. Using good body mechanics at work can prevent many of the cause of back pain and injury.
Back Injury The most common back injury is strain on the lumbar muscle group, which includes the muscles around the lumbar vertebrae.
Causes of Back Injuries Increase force/stress Repetitive Motion/twisting Forward bending Poor or improper lifting techniques Poor posture Poor job design Deconditioned/poor physical fitness
Causes of Back Injuries Forward bending can over-stretch the low back muscles to the point where they can lose strength to protect the spine from injury. Poor posture means that the spine’s normal curves are exaggerated or decreased creating stresses and strains in the tissues.
Causes of Back Injuries Poor or improper lifting techniques Repetitive Motion/twisting
Causes of Back Injuries Poor job design Increased force/stress
Deconditioned/Poor Physical Fitness Obesity creates extra work for the spine Leads to excess fatigue and wear/tear in the body Nicotine damages connective tissue decreasing circulation and oxygen in the blood which affects muscle strength.
