AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION In medieval times: ØFarmers had many small and scattered strips of land to farm. = inefficient!
AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION During the Industrial Revolution: v Landowners began to turn the small strips of land into large fields called * Enclosures! v Farmers could now spend more time working the land could work it more profitably!
AGRICUTURAL REVOLUTION At the same time: Commons property! started to be turned into private What are common lands? All villagers were equally entitled to this land, but only the well off could afford to pay the fees.
AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION Poor Farmers: No longer had anywhere for their animals and sheep to graze. Some had no choice but to sell their farms to richer landowners. Where did these poor farmers go? ? Farming became: A business and people began to farm to earn a profit rather then just to support themselves. Large landowners were able to take advantage of new technology and agriculture became more mechanized!
INVENTIONS OF THE AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION: q Crop Rotation: Lord ‘Turnip’ Towshend q This involved rotating 4 different crops on 4 different fields. This method meant that fields did not have to stand empty in certain years to regain nutrients! Crops and clover release nitrogen into the soil.
INVENTIONS OF THE AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION: Manure and the Seed Drill: Jethro Tull Found manure helped nourish soil. Invented the seed drill: The seed drill was an innovation that allowed seeds to be easily planted deep into the earth instead of on top where the majority were washed away or otherwise lost. The machine was pulled by horses and consisted of rotating drills or runners that would plant seeds at a set depth.
INVENTIONS OF THE AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION: New Breeds: Many farmers began to breed certain types of livestock. This created animals that produced more things such as; milk, meat and wool.
