AGL Safety Presented by Steve Martin Airfield Anorak

AGL Safety Presented by Steve Martin Airfield Anorak (since 1962) & Manchester United Supporter (1963) MALMS 2020 Airfield Lighting Workshop

AGL Safety – Why? Air and Ground Traffic Management Why we need to consider AGL Safety: • Avoid the hazards of electricity – electric shock or burns • Meet the Statutory Regulations - Electricity at Work Regulations (EAWR 1989) • Promote a standard approach – BS EN 61821 (equivalent to 18 th Edition)

AGL Safety – Good Circuit Air and Ground Traffic Management Ø Constant current @ 6. 6 or 12 amps maximum LV Switch Disconnector Ø Five or six levels of brilliancy control available Constant Current Regulator Ø A single core cable of one size (6 mm 2) and voltage rating (5 k. V) Isolation and Earthing Device Ø Circuit is designed to stay on and will not trip on earth fault Ø High values of insulation resistance possible (> 1 GΩ) Field Circuit

AGL Safety – Bad Circuit Air and Ground Traffic Management LV Switch Disconnector Constant Current Regulator Isolation and Earthing Device The Hazards QVoltages above 1000 V (maximum 4500 V) QCircuit designed to produce constant current and stay on QEarth faults should not cause the circuit to ‘trip’ QPeople working on AGL circuits are potential earth faults QNo specific protection for the safety of personnel QThe series circuit transformers do not provide full isolation QInsulation resistance values deteriorate due to age, poor installation or damage (below 1 MΩ or even KΩ common)o Multiple earth faults

AGL Safety Procedures Air and Ground Traffic Management PREPARE - Risk Assessment - Method Statement or Safety Programme - Complete positive identification of circuit ISOLATE - Low voltage supply & constant current circuit Earthing Device PROVE DEAD - At the Isolation &Introduction - At the place of work (if possible) EARTH Whycircuit areand/or AGL and GTM so. Equipment important - Field Power Supply ISSUE - Safety Documentation (PTW or STT)
