Status of Program: Production Tooling, finalization of design and procurement Components procurement, status and plans • Findings • Production tooling design and procurement is progressing reasonably • Component procurement is progressing as planned • Comments • The financial failure of one vendor has caused a delay in the delivery of production parts. The actions taken to address this issue were reasonable. • Durability of the plasma coating on parts at the coil ends is an issue • Recommendations • Reconsider whether plasma-coated end parts are a technical necessity 3

Status of Program: Risk registry and mitigation measures • Findings • Risk management is approached somewhat differently by the US and CERN teams • Both the US and CERN teams have robust and mature risk management plans • Comments • Some issues need to be resolved on the US side before CD-3, for example: • Acceptance Criteria • Number of pre-series magnets • Recommendations • None 4

Other Issues • Assess the long-term stability of the quench heaters including epoxy impregnation

Other Issues • Assess the long-term stability of the quench heaters including epoxy impregnation issues (elimination of bubbles and dry spots) • We recommend that no magnets be rejected if they achieve nominal field + margin (% TBD), but not ultimate field • Quench Protection: • Magnets can be safely protected with either 8 QH or with 1 CLIQ • CLIQ firing circuit has 2 x redundancy • Above 3 k. A: If any number of QH fail, the magnet will be protected by CLIQ • If CLIQ fails, further analysis of the protection by QH is required a It is critical to validate the assumptions and model (including scatter in coil properties) utilized in the simulation. 5

GOALS for T_g measurements 1. Verify if there is correlation btw glass transition temperature

GOALS for T_g measurements 1. Verify if there is correlation btw glass transition temperature (T_g) and coil quench performance By measurement of T_g (average and spread) in coil S 08 (good quench perf. ) and coil P 3 (poor quench perf. In MQXFAP 1 b) G. Ambrosio 12/20/2021 7

GOALS for T_g measurements 3. Assess correlation btw DMA (dynamic mechanical analysis) and DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) for planning production tests Note: DMA requires large samples, therefore only DSC may be performed on production coils with present tooling G. Ambrosio 12/20/2021 10

 • DMA Test Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) tests will be performed on supplied

• DMA Test Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) tests will be performed on supplied 2 x 2 stack samples fabricated at FNAL per ASTM D 7028 to determine the glass transition and stiffness properties. A “standard” sample along with eight additional samples taken from coils manufactured at FNAL will be tested. For reference, DMA specimens should nominally be 2. 25 in. L x 0. 47 in. W x 0. 1 to 0. 125 in. thick. Specimens will be tested using a 3 -point bend method. Tests will be performed from 20°C to +200°C at a rate of 5°C/min. Data deliverables will include tabular and graphical representation of the storage modulus, loss modulus, and the Tan Delta versus temperature, as well as the glass transition temperature (Tg). • DSC Test Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) tests will be performed on supplied material specimens per ASTM D 7426 to determine the glass transition and extent of cure properties. Any sized sample weighing more than 5 grams can be used for this test and eight samples will be extracted and tested by CTD from coil sections supplied by FNAL. Tests will be performed from 20°C to +300°C. Data deliverables will include tabular and graphical representation of the heat flow vs. temperature, the residual heat of reaction, the glass transition temperature (Tg), and the extent of cure. G.
