Warm-Up: November 8, 2017 (4 minutes) Directions: Get signpost organizer out and copy these notes underneath memory moments. Again and Again Moments (Strategy Name) • Events, images, or particular words that reoccur over and over again in a short story or a novel. Clues to signpost/when to stop • An event, word, or particular words, are mentioned over and over again. The reader STOPS. The anchor question(s) to ask yourself (and answer) • Why might the author bring this up over and over again?
Again and Again Moments (Continued) What literary elements it helps us understand? • Symbolism, Plot, Setting, Theme, Character Development, Conflict • Examples: • Think of examples from Shoe, and The Memory String. • Shoe – The shoes symbolize compassion; it also shows a theme of those who show compassion to each other love each other more. • The Memory String – the buttons symbolize her different memories.

What is the again and again moment? Why might the author bring this up over and over again (think symbolism, plot, theme, character development, setting). The Parsley The author brings this up over and over again to symbolize the owner’s relationship with the girlfriend and eventual wife. It also shows how the man’s eating habits change (character development) (as well as what he feeds Winston). Theme – Friendships are best when you support them or make them happy. (the instance when Winston takes the parsley) Plot – The turning point of the story (Climax) would be when Winston runs with the parsley to cheer his owner up
Freak The Mighty Again and Again Moments Chapter 1 and 2 • What does Maxwell keep calling himself? • Butthead • The author is bringing this up again and again to show Maxwell doesn’t have much confidence in himself (this could relate to character development later on). This also relates to plot and the exposition (introducing the character)( • What does Maxwell keep referring to Freak as? • Robot Man; Robot Kid; • The author is bringing this up again and again for us to use our background knowledge of what condition he has. Additionally, he relates to plot with the exposition (introducing the characters).
