AG Shop – General Safety Mr. Meredith Welding Tech. I / II & Equipment Construction

Horse Play "Horse play" or practical jokes will not be tolerated at any time in the welding shop. (the shop is no place for goofing around, safety cannot be compromised, injury and/or equipment abuse are results)

Stop, Think, Act Think about your actions and take responsibility for your actions. Everyone's safety depends upon it.

Report ALL Injuries Report all injuries to the instructor immediately. Any injury must be reported, to prevent future occurrence and/or to determine severity.

Clean Up After Yourself Pick up scraps and materials and dispose of properly. Materials left on the floor can cause injury and should be picked up and put away when no longer being used.

Whistling & Yelling Prohibited No unnecessary whistling or yelling is allowed in the welding shop. This is a distraction that can startle someone and lead to an accident.

Walk, Don’t Run Absolutely NO RUNNING in the shop. I am in no hurry, and there are too many potential wrecks if this rule is not observed.

Don’t Throw Objects No objects are to be thrown in the welding shop. This includes the classroom area and the weld shop areas

Don’t Distract Others Do not talk or disrupt a person while they are operating a machine. Talking to an operator will distract their attention from the machinery.

Safety Zones = 3 ft. Radius Stay out of safety zones around the machines while they are in operation. (overcrowding around a machine can lead to serious injury)

Report Damaged Equipment & Tools If you find anything wrong with the tools or equipment, report it to the Instructor immediately. Damaged tools or equipment can cause accidents and reporting these gives the instructor the chance to repair or replace them.

Permission for Machine Use Get special permission from the teacher before having someone help you use the machine. Most machines are designed for one person operation, if the helper is not taught properly he may cause someone to get hurt.

Machine Use You must have received properating instructions and have passed the safety test before operating any machine. This shows that students have exhibited competence in operating the equipment and understands the safety rules.

Keep the Instructor Informed You must inform the instructor when you are going to work in the shop and when operating the power tools. It is the teachers job to supervise your work and be aware of what is happening in the shop so that your project is completed safely. The instructor can tell from the sound of the machine if something is wrong, and with prompt action a accident may be prevented.

Keep Aisles Clear Work or stock should not be placed in vises, clamps, or stored so that it sticks out into the aisles. Work that is stored or placed in a vise so that it interferes with normal movement, is dangerous as someone may trip.

Work Together Long pieces of wood or metal should be carried by two or more students. Carry it slowly and carefully. Long lengths of lumber or metal are difficult to control and could be the cause of an accident when not handled properly.

Protect your Face! A face shield should be worn when drilling, chiseling, or hacksawing overhead and also when using the abrasive cut off saw. (this will protect your eyes and face)

Ladder Use When using a ladder the top two steps are not to be used. It is very difficult to remain stable when standing on these steps.

Oil Fires Extinguish oil fires with proper materials or proper type of extinguisher. Use sand, dirt, foam, CO 2, or Halon fire extinguishers; do not use water as it spreads fire; oil floats on top of water.

Oily and Greasy Rags Oily or greasy rags must be placed in suitable metal containers. Oily or greasy rags often cause spontaneous combustion.

Falling Objects Do not place tools on steps of ladders unless steps are magnetized. The objects stored on the ladder will fall.

Think “Safety” Common sense and good judgement are essential to maintaining a safe shop environment. Every unsafe condition cannot be covered by a rule or warning; safety depends on you!

Fire Drills Students are to observe all fire drill instructions. When the fire drill sounds turn off the torches and equipment and walk carefully to the road in the behind the Ag building. When each student knows where they are to go in case of a fire, there is less confusion and everyone can safely get out of the area.

Safe Lifting Never attempt to lift heavy materials. Heavy lifts may cause dangerous strains, which may result in permanent injury. Lift loads with your legs, not your back.

No Loose Clothing Never wear loose clothing, neckties or loose sleeves while operating any machine. Loose clothing can get caught up in machinery, causing serious injury. Jewelry can also be a hazard around machinery.

Prevent Slip Hazards Immediately clean up grease or oil spills on the floor and/or equipment. Someone may slip and fall, therefore immediate clean up is important!

Prevent Trip Hazards Never leave pieces of round stock lying around on the floor. Such materials may cause a serious fall.

Oil Cans Do not leave oil cans on benches or tables of machines. Many oil containers are prone to leaking or have oil drips from them.

Machines in Motion Most machines must never be oiled, cleaned, or adjusted while in motion. These tasks are carried out safely only when machine is not in use.

Shut-Off Powered Equipment When leaving power driven machinery, always turn off the power and wait until machine has stopped to leave. Someone might come in contact with the machine and become injured.

Safety Guards All safety guards must be properly in place before power is turned on and while machine is in use. Guards are required by law. If not in proper position, someone could be injured.

Electric Equipment - Grounded All portable electric equipment must be grounded through ground wire. This protects the operator from electrical shock due to shorts and is required by law.

Keep Tools Clean Always clean all tools before placing them in the storage cabinet. Grease and oil can cause tools to become difficult to handle; also excess water can cause tools to rust.

Safety Glasses Required When in the agriculture shop students will wear safety glasses at ALL times. There is always a possibility of injuring your eye in the shop; students are working in the shop at many different times.

Dress Attire Proper dress is required at all times in the shop; this includes proper leg and foot protection; no short pants or open toed shoes. Exposed areas are extremely susceptible to injury; coveralls are recommended.

No Glass Containers! No glass containers are allowed in the shop. The glass could easily be broken and someone could be cut.

Extension Cords Always be certain the extension cord is kept free from oil and grease and that it is laid so that no one will trip over it; Be sure to place them back on the racks after their use. Oil and grease may rot the cords and cause shorts.

If you use a tool – put it back! If you make a mess – Clean it up! Any Questions?
