Description of Game • This African Canadian Studies game is adapted from the Hasbro game “Taboo. ” Hasbro describes “Taboo” as “the game of unspeakable fun. ” It is a fast-paced word game that requires players to provide hints to their teammates so that they may guess the keyword without saying any of the “taboo” words. It requires that players think quickly on their feet, be creative, and understand the keywords on the playing cards. Players must draw on prior knowledge and shared experience with their teammates to succeed in this game.
Directions/Rules 1. An even number of players form two teams. If possible, they may alternate seats around in a circle. 2. Players take turns trying to get his or her teammates to guess as many keywords (bolded, underlined text at the top of each card) as possible in the allotted time. 3. However, each card also has "taboo" (forbidden) words listed underneath the keyword which may not be spoken.
4. Should the player say a taboo word, someone on the opposing team hits the buzzer and the player must move on to the next word. 5. For example, a player might have to get his or her team to say "baseball" without saying "sport, " "game, " "pastime, " "hitter, " "pitcher, " or "baseball" itself. 6. The player may not say ANY part of a "taboo" word; for example, using "base" in "baseball" is taboo. 7. The player may only use speech to prompt his or her teammates; gestures, sounds (e. g. barking), or drawings are not allowed.
8. The player cannot say what the "taboo" word is "not". 9. Singing is permitted, provided the singer is singing words rather than humming or whistling a tune. 10. The player's hints may not rhyme or sound like a taboo word, or be an abbreviation of a taboo word. 11. While the player is prompting the teammates they make as many guesses as they want with no penalties for wrong guesses.
12. Once the team correctly guesses the word exactly as written on the card, the player moves on to the next word, trying to get as many words as possible in the allotted time. 13. When time runs out, play passes to the next player of the other team. 14. The playing team receives one point for correct guesses and one penalty point if "taboo" words are spoken.
