Why I chose this Group I chose this group because I wanted a better understanding of the group and its culture. I knew that I would have clients in the future who may be in this group and I wanted to be more culturally competent. I grew up not really knowing this group that well because I never had the opportunity of being around the group by going to Catholic schools up until college.
Summary of group I found this group to have a strong base in their community as well as in their spirituality. I found that I obtain information from reading articles online but when I actually went out and interviewed Flora Lee, the information I received from her was better information.
Personal stereotypes and biases I feel as though I had those stereotypes that one hears about African Americans before in my mind at one point and I feel after this project and especially after interviewing Flora Lee that I feel more informed about the group so that I will not have as much bias towards the group.
Summary of how the group copes with an issue in the lifespan. When interviewing Flora Lee, I asked her whether or not African Americans had the same experience with midlife crises compared with whites. She said that African Americans do experience it but that it is referred as a white person’s problem to an extent. She said there is a sort of denial with the idea of African Americans having midlife crises.
Flora Lee Interviewing Flora Lee was a great opportunity because of how knowledgeable she was on the group. I was able to get a lot of different information about the group from topics such as “How active is the NAACP in our area” to learning about Kwanzaa
