Our Current Situation African-American households are at risk of being undercounted. The African-American population has been historically undercounted in the decennial census, disadvantaging their families, communities, and neighborhoods. In fact: • The 2010 Census undercounted the African-American population by more than 800, 000 • Approximately 7% of young African-American children were overlooked by the 2010 Census, roughly twice the rate for young non-Hispanic White children • African-American men have been historically undercounted in greater numbers than men of other racial or ethnic groups • Today, more than one in three African Americans live in hard-to-count areas like New

Community Events on March 28 th, 2020 across NM in as many target areas as possible (Hobbs, Clovis, Rio Rancho, Alamogordo, Las Cruces, Roswell and Albuquerque) 3. See an increase above 2. 6% Black / African Americans (NM 2010 Census Data) after Census 2020 4. To reach all of the African American diaspora communities (African Americans, Africans, Black Americans, etc). Target Audiences Black / African American individuals living in New Mexico of ALL ages, especially the HTC groups like 0 -19.

Outreach Methods 1. Table with US Census Bureau at as many events in the Black Community as possible. We plan to ask attendees to sign up to receive Census Updates via email or Text. Below is a list of events we are targeting. 1. MLK Celebrations Jan 2020 2. Black History Month Celebrations Feb 2020 3. Summits, conferences, seminars 4. Community events 2. SMS Text or Email Updates to community members who sign up during various events 3. Radio / Podcast interviews 1. 99. 9 The Beat 2. UNM Health Hour 3. Don Chase 4. Famous Frank’s Radio (Famous Hip Hop) 5. Shut up and Talk 4. TV Interviews 1. KOB 4 Community 2. NM in Focus with host Gene Grant 3. KOAT Channel 7 5. Department of Sr. Affairs Collaboration 1. Flyers in packets to Seniors utilizing Home Repairs Program 2. Training for Home Repairs Staff to help assist elderly with actually completing the Census form. 6. Student Group Video Contest 1.
