Workshop objectives & topics • Workshop objectives recalled – To contribute to a truly user-driven development of GEOSS by discussing the currently applied and other potentially useful approaches to gather user-related needs and information relevant for GEOSS. • Topics – Main activities of GEO to engage users in the development of GEOSS – Activities to gather and analyze user needs & to determine gaps in GEOSS; discussion of methods applied – Role of user needs in the GEOSS Common Infrastructure – ‘Innovative’ approaches to engage users – Advices and lessons learnt from other initiatives
Advices to GEO/UIC • • • Consultation of TYIP that contains a lot of language on users, user engagement and requirements gathering Co. Ps show interesting, successful approaches (tailored to their communities) to engage users need to be analyzed Gaining broader knowledge of (potential) users, involving additional applications etc. Define semantics of expressed user needs/requirements Provide/foster mechanisms for users to connect with other users (URR, Co. P approach, etc. ) Development of a user-friendly GCI (avoid processes that scare users away) Raise realistic expectations and develop realistic schedules (EO game, CFP) Usage of web statistics to learn about the search behavior and language of users ( segmentation of users) Focus on applications rather than users or providers
