What does an adverb do? An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. n An adverb tells how, when, where, why, how often, and how much. n
What are the four categories of adverbs? n Time n These tell us when, how often, how long n n Place n These tell us where, to where, from where n n here, there, nearby, yonder, backward, forward Manner n These often end in –ly and tell how something is done n n today, yesterday, daily, weekly, briefly, eternally precisely, regularly, regally, smoothly, well Degree n These tell us how much, how little n substantially, greatly, entirely, partly, too
Three forms of adverbs n n Adverbs have three forms just like adjectives. Positive: describes a verb, adjective, or adverb without comparing it to anything else. n n Comparative (-er) compares two nouns. n n Superman runs fast. Superman thinks quickly. Tarzan runs faster than Superman. Tarzan thinks more quickly than Superman. Superlative (-est) compares three or more nouns. n Big Bird runs fastest of all. Big Bird thinks most quickly of all.
How are these different than adjectives? ! Adverbs and adjectives seem extremely similar. Always look for this: is the word you are trying to categorize changing the noun (blue jeans) or changing the verb (runs fast)? n Don’t worry if you get confused! Practice makes perfect. n
