Impact of Alcohol on the Nation • Excessive alcohol use is the 3 rd leading lifestyle-related cause of death for the nation, attributing to 79, 000 deaths a year • Impact of alcohol on Georgia – Underage drinking is widespread in Georgia – Approximately 296, 000 underage customers drink each year in Georgia
Impact on Georgia • In 2013, Georgia students in grades 9 -12 reported the following: • 59. 2% had at least one drink of alcohol on one or more days during their life • 18. 1% had their first drink of alcohol, other than a few sips, before age 13 • 27. 9% had at least one drink of alcohol on one or more occasions in the past 30 days • 13. 3% had participated in binge drinking (five or more drinks of alcohol in a row) in the past 30 days
Harm Associated with Underage Drinking in Georgia • Underage drinking in GA leads to substantial harm due to the following: – – – Traffic crashes Violent crime Property crime Unintentional injury High-risk sex
Harm Associated with Underage Drinking in Georgia • The following harms were caused by underage drinking during 2012: – An estimated 33 traffic fatalities and 1, 602 nonfatal traffic injuries were attributed to driving after underage drinking – Estimated 3 homicides – 16, 000 nonfatal violent crimes such as rape, robbery, and assault – 31, 700 property crimes such as burglary, larceny, and car theft – 594, 000 public order crimes including vandalism, disorderly conduct, loitering and curfew violations
Harm Associated with Underage Drinking in Georgia • In 2011, an estimated 8 alcohol involved fatal burns, drowning, and suicides were attributed to underage drinking • In 2013, an estimated 761 teen pregnancies and 21, 882 teens having high-risk sex were attributable to underage drinking • The harm from underage drinking per youth in Georgia averages $730 – Note: Price was calculated in U. Overview of Alcohol Prevention Project (APP) • The purpose of Alcohol Prevention Project (APP) comprehensive model is to build capacity and infrastructure within the state, regions, and sub regions through key policy stakeholders • To ensure long-term sustainability of evidence-based substance use and abuse prevention efforts, APP adopted the SAMHSA/CSAP Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) model *State changed name from ‘Georgia Strategic Prevention System’ to ‘Alcohol Prevention Project’ *Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Strategic Prevention Framework • This comprehensive data-driven model consists of 5 steps: – – – Needs Assessment Capacity Building and Infrastructure Strategic Planning Implementation Evaluation • It also includes cross-cutting components: – Sustainability – Cultural Competance
Goals of the Alcohol Prevention Project • APP has identified 3 goals pertaining to underage drinking: – Goal 1: Positive Social Norms – Goal 2: Sticker Shock – Goal 3: Active Parenting of Teens
Strategies • Positive Social Norms Approach: Be the Wall – Educate the community on actual vs. perceived norms about alcohol use • Sticker Shock – Place signs or stickers on alcoholic products in retail establishments – To educate consumers on the laws/dangers of providing alcohol to minors • Active Parenting of Teens – A 6 week intensive Active Parenting program for parents and teens – Aims to increase communication, inform and empower parents to set clear limits, empower teens to make good choices and better communication tools – Encourage problem solving skills and teaches families about the dangers of underage drinking
Steps Completed So Far • We have completed – Step 1: Needs Assessment – Step 2: Capacity Building and Community Mobilization – Establish CPAW – *We are currently recruiting for more members* – Step 3: Strategic Planning • We are currently in Step 4: implementing the programs selected – Positive Social Norms – Sticker Shock – Active Parenting of Teens
This Is Where Your Expertise Comes In • The Walton and Jackson Counties have been jointly awarded the Alcohol Prevention Project grant (APP), which is designed to both inform parents of the dangers of underage drinking and empower and educate youth to make good choiceseliminating the early onset of drinking

We are putting together a coalition of community people dedicated to this mission and we feel that your experience and expertise would greatly benefit these efforts
