Advanced Placement vs. Dual Enrollment

What are they? Advanced Placement Exams (AP) and Dual Enrollment (DE) are two different ways to earn college credit while in high school.

Why is this important? Why would someone sign up to take the AP Exam or DE? ▪ Build study skills ▪ Enhance your college resume ▪ College classes are taught in a smaller environment ▪ Length of time to complete college may be shortened. ▪ Obtain a minor or double major at the college or university. ▪ Cost savings

Which is right for me? Advanced Placement: q q Am I a good test taker? Will I attend a “select” school? Plan on state Honor’s College? Can use tax credit donations to pay for the AP Exam Dual Enrollment: q Am I staying in state for college? q Am I going to a “state” school outside of AZ?

If the course is listed as both should I enroll in both? ▪ YES of course it is always a good idea to do both. ▪ If your AP Score does not qualify you, your dual enrollment will (“C” or better). ▪ If your AP Score qualifies you, you might be able to apply the AP to the required course and the DE class to an elective. BUT…Depends on the College. Do your research.

How can I tell if the AP class/credit will count toward my degree? • Research your college and check the major map. • Placement for the AP class might be different depending on the major. How can I tell if the DE class/credit will count toward my degree? Check AZ Transfer for ASU, Uof. A, NAU • http: //www. aztransfer. com/

How do I sign up? AP DE ▪ Information will be available in November. ▪ Teachers will distribute applications ▪ Log onto the ACP Guidance Center Website to locate the class list ▪ Complete the application and Accuplacer if needed. (next slides) ▪ Return the form to the College and Career Center before Aug. 10 th

Dual Enrollment (DE) How to Begin? ▪ Your teachers will notify you if the class is eligible. ▪ Teachers will have the section number next week. DE Steps 1. Create MEID (User ID): Maricopa. edu/MAW 2. Click on “Apply for Admission Link” (Follow steps on Enrollment form) 3. Submit Identification (AZ Driver’s license, permit, state ID or US Passport then high school ID AND birth certificate). 4. Take Placement Test (Accuplacer at college). Contact testing center. 5. Turn in signed DE form. Check with teacher for due date 6. Pay tuition and fees. ▪ Sign up by July 31 ▪ Activate your email at google. Maricopa. edu once registered.
