Spur Gears ► Most common type ► Transfers motion between parallel shafts
Rack Gear The rack gear is combined with a spur gear called the pinion. When rotational motion is applied to the pinion, it moves the rack side to side. ► Used for steering ► ►
Worm Gears Used for large gear ratios Resistant to back driving. It is almost impossible to drive the worm with the wheel. ► Useful for braking and locking. ► ►
Bevel Gears ► Change the axis of rotation as well as the direction of motion. ► Used in differentials.
Differentials ► Most common type is one output divided into 2 outputs (i. e. engine to the drive wheels). ► Allows the wheels to rotate at different speeds while applying equal torque.
Differentials ► As a vehicle turns, the outside wheels travel further than the inside wheels. The outside wheels need to turn faster to make the turn more smoothly. ► Differentials consist of bevel gears inside a differential housing. ► If the load on both sides of the housing is equal, the center bevel does not rotate and both outputs (wheels) are the same. ► If the load is only on one side, the center bevel rotates allowing the outputs (wheels) to spin at different rates.
