Advanced Placement Program n A program that offers students college- level courses while still in high school. n AP can help you earn credit toward a college degree before you even graduate from high school.
Advanced Content is not Advanced Placement Some differences: AC is local curriculum based on local standards – content determined by CCSD. n AP is national curriculum based on college standards – content determined by College Board and AP exam. n AC curriculum is designed to be middle school level. n AP curriculum is designed to be college level. n AC is for middle school course credit. n AP is high school course credit AND may also be accepted by some colleges as a college credit, depending on the score received on the AP exam. n
The Benefits of AP classes? n Save money on tuition n Graduate from college sooner n Impress college admissions officers n Help develop college-level academic skills n Increase your chances for college-specific scholarships
Who Can Take AP Courses? n AP is the right choice for you if you are motivated to work hard, and if you enjoy an academic challenge. n AP classes are more challenging than honors or on-level classes. They involve deeper concentration, more time and energy, and students must meet higher expectations. n AP Potential uses PSAT data to identify students who are likely to score a 3 or higher on a specific AP exam. These results can help students determine which AP classes are a good fit.
How Many AP Courses Should I Take Per Semester? n Freshman and Sophomores are limited in the number of available AP courses available. n However, as Juniors and Seniors…. let common sense be your guide. Take the number of AP courses you think you can handle. Remember: AP homework is more demanding.
Earn Credit… n Your AP experience might exempt you from taking introductory courses in college. n Most colleges have an AP policy that grants incoming students credit, placement, or both for qualifying AP Examination grades.
What is the AP Exam? n AP Exams are taken in May at the end of the AP course. They typically last 3 hours and involve multiple-choice questions and essays or problems.
Do I Have to Take the AP Exam? n Students who register for an AP exam are exempt from the final exam in the AP course. – If a student registers but does not take the exam in May, a zero will be calculated into the final grade or the student will need to make arrangements with the teacher to take the missed final exam.
AP Exam Grading System n AP Exams are scored using a five-point scale. n Students who do well on the exams may become eligible to receive credit or placement in college. – Most colleges require at least a 3 or higher to receive credit.
College Board AP Credit Search n College Board’s AP Credit Search allows students to find colleges and universities that offer credit or placement for AP scores. However, for the most up-to-date AP credit policy information, students are encouraged to check the institution's website. n https: //apscore. collegeboard. org/creditand placement/search-credit-policies
