Adult Learners – Adults are busy people with Multiple Life Roles • • Working Families/parents/single parents Community members Church, civic responsibilities, kids sports – They have a perceived need to overcome a deficit they have identified for themselves.
• Get a job, Get a better job, Advance or keep current with industry standards. • Earn a degree or credential which they believe will open doors which were previously closed to them. n Categories of Adult Education Providers – Literacy programs <3 rd to 8 th grade level – Adult Basic Education/GED Prep ESL/Citizenship (High School Equivalency)
– Community Colleges • Academic Core for Transfer • Career and Technical Programs • Continuing Education – Colleges and Universities • Traditional age full-time students living on campus are not considered adult learners. • Other students may or may not be viewed as adult learners but probably should be. – Professional Development & Continuing Education Centers – Health, Fitness, Wellness
– Religious Studies – The Armed Forces (the largest provider of adult education in the world) – Correctional Facilities – Recreational sports, Art, Dance, Culture – Woodworking, home improvements, gardening, outdoor living. – Foreign language skills – Computer or technology skills – Cooking and home entertainment – Any planned activity with a specific timeline for completion.
Self Directed Learners – Many adults are very capable of being selfdirected learners empowered to make important decisions about their course of study, progress, assessment, evaluation. – Others are not. They are dependent and they need a helping hand, support, reassurance, remediation, step-by-step instruction and monitoring. – Move from dependent to independent.
Assessment & Evaluation – Did the participants establish realistic goals? – Did the participants reach those goals? • If not did they come close? • If yes did they set new goals and keep moving forward? – Did the participants feel positive about the experience? Why or why not. – Suggestions for improvement or change.
