Welcome Parents! • Goals for Curriculum Night: • To help parents understand the work their child will be doing throughout the school year. • • To explain teacher expectations of the students. To share information about how parents can support their child’s learning.
Meet the Teachers • Ms. Davis– Reading, Writing, Language • Mrs. Mc. Inroe – Math • Mrs. Jarrett – Science, Social Studies • Mrs. Smyers– Reading, Writing, Language • Mrs. Norwood – Math • Mrs. Howard – Science, Social Studies
Book Clubs Students will be exposed to all types of Genres including realistic fiction, mystery, historical fiction, etc. We will supplement novels with our Texas Treasures Textbook. These are a class set. We will also provide independent reading time throughout the week.
Rotations/Task Teams As part of our Balanced Literacy curriculum, teachers will differentiate reading instruction in class and rotations. Teachers will use assessment data to plan and adjust students’ small group placement. Groups will be flexible and will focus on specific strategies and skills needed by students. Students will rotate between literacy-based activities, independent reading, and meeting with the teacher as part of our Reader’s Workshop approach.

Math Hands On Manipulatives Daily Homework Multiplication Fluency – Fast Fact Practice each week, one daily grade at the end of the 9 weeks. Go Math – online textbook and consumable workbook
Bulldog Basics: Fact Fluency Students will have a 90 second timed fact test every 9 weeks. Fifth graders must complete 25 problems in the 90 seconds given. Any facts left blank after the 90 seconds will be counted incorrect. Students will take one Fast Fact Quiz weekly. These quizzes will then be averaged together for one daily grade. It will be the 11 th grade in math. Fact Fluency homework will be given every week during each 9 week period. Homework sheets will be provided with details about the math facts students need to study. Teachers will provide students with time in class to practice facts that are being studied at home. A website has been provided to parents on the back of the Fact Fluency Homework sheet that can be used when studying their facts.
Writers Workshop • Empowering Writers • Grammar • Spelling: All words will be given at the beginning of the 9 weeks. Graded assessment will occur during the 8 th week of the 9 weeks. This will count as a minor grade.
Homework Incomplete homework will result in a conduct mark on behavior chart Some type of homework will be required nightly. Please check your child’s agenda to see what they have for homework. Students will write homework in their planners.
LCISD Grading Policy • • All corrections on daily graded work must be made in school. • Students will not be given make-up work ahead of time when parents remove their children for trips during school days. • Any work that is to be graded will not be sent home for completion. Late Work Policy – classwork will be accepted late within the current grading period with these guidelines in place: One (1) day late = 0 points off Two (2) days late = 10 points off Three (3) days late = highest grade possible is a 70 Extenuating circumstances will be reviewed by campus policy.
Reassessment A teacher shall provide corrective instruction and a reasonable opportunity to reassess failure to master TEKS on major grades. The highest possible grade that can be earned and recorded on the reassessment is a 70. The teacher will make a note in the electronic grade book of the dates and grades of the reassessment. Creation of guidelines for implementation of the policy is the responsibility of the campus. Students whose rate of learning will not meet successful mastery of grade level material will have interventions monitored through the Rt. I process.
Make-Up Work • All graded work must be completed in class • Unfinished work can be completed during lunch bunch, recess, before school, or other arrangements will be made with the teacher • District Policy dictates that students will not be given make up work ahead of time for absences.
Agendas • It is the student’s responsibility to record homework assignments • The teacher will check for parent signatures • Conduct mark(s) will be recorded in the agenda on the behavior chart located in the back • Parents are asked to initial nightly (but please do not sign ahead)

Adolphus Uniform Policy Uniform Tops must be collared (polo style) and one of the following colors: light blue, navy blue, red, black, or white. The bottoms may be navy blue, khaki or denim. Denim includes denim skirts, skorts, shorts, capris or jeans. No holes in jeans. Please check the lengths of shorts and skirts. Shorts and skirts must reach the tips of the fingers. Inside sweaters or light jackets must be red, white, navy or light blue. Outside jackets can be any color.
Nine Week Behavior Conduct chart by grade level: Expectations Grade Level Expectations S = 0 -5 conduct mark 5 th Overall conduct N = 6 -8 conduct mark grade U = 9+ conduct mark Conduct grades will include conduct marks received for no homework. Office referrals will automatically lower the conduct grade. For students to attend the 9 Weeks Good Behavior Celebration, students must have an “S” in ALL areas on their report card. If a student loses their card this will result in an “N” for following directions.

Birthday Guidelines • We would love to celebrate your child’s birthday! • Pre-packaged cookies or cupcakes may be brought to school. (NO cookie cakes or cakes of any kind) Teachers will distribute the treat at the end of lunch to your child’s homeroom only.
Parent Conference Dates • Teachers will meet with parents to review student progress for the first nine weeks. • Conferences will be held on November 1 st and 2 nd. • The first nine weeks report card will be distributed at the conference. • Information will be given at a later date on how to sign up.
STAAR (State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness) Testing Dates (2018 -2019) April 9 th - 5 th Math April 10 th - 5 th Reading May 15 th – 5 th Science Student in grade 5 have three opportunities to pass the STAAR mathematics test and three opportunities to pass the STAAR reading test. If a student does not pass one or both tests, the school must give the student additional instruction after each testing opportunity, and the student must participate in that instruction. Parents will be notified if their child does not pass a STAAR test that is required for promotion. If a student has not passed after the second testing opportunity, a grade placement committee (GPC) is formed. The GPC, which consists of the principal, teacher, and parent or guardian, will create an instructional plan based on the individual needs of the student.
A Note About EXCUSED Absences From Mrs. Almendarez (Assistant Principal) • In order for an absence to be excused, the student must bring a note signed by the parent, health provider or court official that describes the reason for the absence. The district will excuse a student from attending school ONLY for certain situations. Adolphus Absence Form • If the length of the student’s absence is 5 consecutive days or more, a doctor’s excuse is required. • Please see the LCISD Elementary Handbook pages 10 -13 for more information on excused absences. A Note About UNEXCUSED Absences From Mrs. Almendarez (Assistant Principal) When an absence is considered unexcused, the following procedure will be followed: • • 4 unexcused absences- Front office staff sends a friendly note home to the parent. (Signature required. ) 6 unexcused absences- Asst. Principal sends a second notice home to the parent (Signature required). 8 unexcused absences- Asst. Principal alerts the school social worker and calls the parents. An Attendance Review Committee meeting is scheduled (if necessary). 10 unexcused absences- Asst. Principal calls the parent and alerts the social worker. An LCISD Elementary Attendance letter is sent home. An Attendance Review Committee Meeting is scheduled and the parent is invited to attend.
A Note About the TARDY POLICY From Mrs. Almendarez (Assistant Principal) In order to not be counted tardy, students must be in the building by the 7: 30 AM bell. If student is tardy they will sign in or will be signed in to the Tardy Kiosk (new this year, district-wide): • • 1 st Tardy- Warning 2 nd Tardy- Lunch Bunch • • 3 rd Tardy- Recess • • • Student sits quietly and eats lunch Teacher choice recess activity 4 th Tardy- Administrator contacts parent 5 th, 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th Tardy-Discipline referral entered into Skyward 9 th Tardy-Attendance Review Committee meeting for parents Students who are considered for perfect attendance may only have 1 tardy The tardy count starts at zero each 9 week grading period.
A Note about Lunch From Mrs. Almendarez (Assistant Principal) You are welcome to come eat lunch with your child(ren) during scheduled lunch times. Please follow these guidelines when doing so: • Sign in at the front office and walk to the café. Visitors are allowed in main hallway and Café only. • Sit at parent table or unoccupied table only. • Lunch is with your child(ren) only. Due to space, there is not room for friends. • If the parent tables are full, ask a teacher for assistance.
Transportation Changes • Best practice is to send a written note to the school with your child. Please do not email the teacher regarding the change since they are teaching during the day. Transportation Change Note • If you need to make a last minute change, call the front office prior to 2: 00 PM. 832 -223 -4700 - Do not email the teacher please; they are busy teaching.
Medications • All medication must be kept in nurse’s clinic—this includes cough drops • All medication must be in original container—if prescription, must have label with student’s name and information on it • All medication must be accompanied by appropriate paperwork—medication papers may be found on Adolphus website under nurse’s note, or picked up from nurse (Nurse Kozak is also very willing to email you a copy for your convivence) • Over the counter, short term medications, such as cough drops or antibiotics also need appropriate paperwork, which can also be found on website under nurse’s notes and is called “Parental Permit to Administer Medication At School For 6 Weeks Or Less” –if unable to print this copy , you may send a dated note listing student’s name, name of medication, reason for giving, time/frequency and duration that it is to be given—parent signature is also needed • If your child has a life threatening allergy or asthma, please get with Nurse Kozak to discuss and provide appropriate paperwork and medication on campus for those “in case” moments for your child’s safety. • If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the nurse at 832 -2234706 or email at jkozak@lcisd. org
Peanut Free Classrooms • Classrooms are to be peanut free. A child with serious peanut allergy can potentially suffer a reaction merely by touching or smelling a food with peanut or peanut butter • Please do not send any peanuts, peanut butter or foods containing these items as snacks. They will not be allowed to be eaten in the classroom • Any food sent to share in classroom i. e. birthday cupcakes, cookies etc, is to be store bought, in original container with ingredient list that is peanut free • The above does not apply to lunches, children will still be able to eat food of their choice in lunch room as we have ensured areas that will remain peanut free zones. • Thank you in advance for your cooperation. Exciting Opportunities for Fifth Graders! • * Field Trip to TAMU later in the year! Each year 5 th grade students will attend a field trip to TAMU. During this trip we are able to ride charter buses, tour parts of campus, shop in the book store and visit the George Bush Presidential Library. While at the library will be attend a special presentation and take the guided tour. It is a wonderful and unique day for our students! • *We will also have a special 5 th Grade Graduation and Celebration at Main Event
