Selection Vocabulary The purpose of the selection vocabulary is to teach students a strategy for figuring out the meaning of unknown words. n Word structure n Apposition n Context Clues n Cognates 9
Explicit Strategy Instruction n Students make meaning from the text. Students become metacognitive with strategy use. This is done through a modeled read and think-aloud. 10
Using Reading Strategies n n n Pre-identifies the strategies to be modeled. The teacher names, defines, and models the strategies to be used and tells why good readers use these strategies. Strategies are posted on the board for teacher to reference during the instructional period. 11
