Preparing a test timetable • Schools decide the start times of the tests but tests must be taken on the day they are timetabled • All children taking the tests must take the test at same time unless unavoidable practical difficulties make this impossible • Where a school schedules two sittings, no child should have the opportunity to communicate with any children who have already taken the test. Second sitting must immediately follow first. • Timetables should have been submitted to the LA by 28 April 2017

Preparing for the KS 2 tests • STA encourages schools to hold training sessions for those involved in administering KS 2 tests. Ensure all test administrators understand all procedures in advance of the tests • Consider number of administrators -arrangements should be in place in case a child needs to be removed. STA recommends at least 2 test administrators in each room. Single administrators are more vulnerable to allegations of maladministration Ø Provide space where children can work individually and undisturbed Ø A clock should be visible to help children pace themselves

Examples given; 1. a written translation is required for a maths test 2. a test paper needs to be adapted to meet individual children’s needs If this is insufficient time, schools must apply for permission for early opening. Information about when modified test materials can be opened is printed on each pack. • Once packs are open, teachers and test administrators must not discuss the contents with anyone or use question specific information to prepare children for the test.

Floor and coasting standards in 2016 Floor standard • In 2016, a school was above the floor standard if: • at least 65% of pupils achieve the expected standard in reading, writing and maths or • the school has a sufficient progress scores in -5 in reading, -5 in maths and -7 in writing Coasting • Regulations were approved by Parliament in January. • In 2016 a school was defined as coasting if it was below these levels in all 3 of these years: • 2014 –fewer than 85% of pupils achieve L 4+ and pupils failed to make expected progress, and • 2015 –fewer than 85% of pupils achieve L 4+ and pupils failed to make expected progress, and • 2016 –fewer than 85% of pupils achieve the new higher expected standard and average progress made by pupils is less than -2. 5 in reading, -2. 5 in maths or -3. 5 in writing
