The skirt is flared (wider than A-line) and made of light-weight viscose, allowing any wind to swirl the fabric like a flag. It’s blue with a bold printed stripe all around, and an invisible hem. The beltless waist-band is the same bold stripe as the skirt. Leg-warmers are optional. This pair is loose -knit wool, and extra-long to include the knees. The upper cuffs hide elastic garters, which are needed for outdoor activities. Bare feet are optional, too. He’s not wearing ankle-decorations because the long legwarmers would interfere.

About the boy and the unisex skirt: Today’s fashion is so casual that we’re forgetting about emphasizing our bodies. Everybody I know wears skinny pants, tights, and a sweater, in dark, soft fabric. But I like expressive legs and arms, on others as well as myself. When I wear short-shorts, the girls say I look good, so already I am a walking contradiction between fashion and convention. This year I tried skirts. I found denim skirts in second-hand stores, and viscose pleated skirts in the malls. All are low-cost, casual and practical, and not feminine, but mostly short mini-skirts. They’re easy to fit, and easy to combine into outfits with any shirt, sweater, or jacket. In the fall I add leg-warmers, or sometimes leggings, and warm sweaters. I needed advice though, so when I asked, I learned two rules about mini-skirts: Rule #1 – Walk with confidence. Rule #2 – Your legs are on display. They are the focus. In fact, bare legs offer the opportunity to show off bobby-sox or ankle decorations. Short skirts are so comfortable that I now hate wearing pants. Some ladies I’ve talked with, tell me that they feel the same way. However modesty is sometimes a problem. There is no resolution for this, so it’s up to each individual to decide how to dress. So now, I have decided that skirts should be unisex and general. Bare feet is another matter. I myself have always found bare feet to be more comfortable than any shoes. But my experience around the city, is that the taboo against bare feet is even stronger than the custom that men don’t wear skirts.
