Adjectives usually answer one of these four questions: What Kind? new car striped tie Which One? this swan every page How Many? one hamburger many geese How Much? no food little rain
Modifying Nouns and Pronouns When adjectives modify nouns, they usually come directly before the nouns. Occasionally, they may come after. When adjectives modify pronouns, they usually come after a linking verb. Occasionally, they may come before. BEFORE: She saw a bright, smiling face. BEFORE: They are happy and talkative. AFTER: The room, narrow and dark, frightened us. AFTER: Quiet and sullen, he sat in a corner.
