What is an adjective? Ø Also called a modifier Ø Describes nouns and pronouns l l Example: The brown dog is eating his bone. Example: She is pretty.
Adjectives answer 3 questions Ø What kind? l Example: I like Stephanie’s colorful paintings. Ø Which one? l Example: I saw those pictures in this museum. Ø How many or how much? l l Example: Melissa admired several sculptures by one artist. Example: We ate some tacos for supper with a few friends.
Where do adjectives come in a sentence? Ø Adjectives can come before or after the word they describe. l l l Example: That picture shows three blue birds. Example: Her paintings, bright and strange, amuse me. Example: The painting in the hall was bright and colorful.
What is an adverb? • Describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb • A modifier • Many end in –ly
Where do adverbs come in a sentence? • Adverbs can come anywhere in a sentence. • The butterfly often flies high. • Often the butterfly flies high. • The butterfly flies high often.
What do questions do adverbs answer? • When? (yesterday) • Where? (here, there) • How? (quickly, high)
Adverbs can modify verbs • The bird flew high in the sky. • How did the bird fly? • The bird flew high. • High is the adverb.
Adverbs can modify adjectives • The waterfall was flowing very fast. • How fast was the waterfall flowing? • It was flowing very fast. • Very is the adverb.
Adverbs can modify other adverbs • Look over your paper very carefully. • How carefully should you look? • Very carefully. • Very describes how carefully you should look. • Very is the adverb that describes carefully another adverb.
