Addition and Subtraction of Monomials and Polynomials Grade
Addition and Subtraction of Monomials and Polynomials Grade 9 Samantha Ditman October 30, 2009
DEFINITIONS OF MONOMIALS AND POLYNOMIALS • Monomials – one term. Ex) 5 x 3 , 2 x • Polynomials – one or more terms. Ex) xy, 2 x 23 y • Binomials – two terms. Ex) (x + 1), (5 x – 2 y) • Trinomials – three terms. Ex) x 2 + 5 x – 3
Standard form of polynomialswritten in order from LARGEST degree to the SMALLEST degree You do not use the number in front of the x, but rather you use the exponent to put the terms in order. Ex) x 5 + x 4 + x 3 + x 2 + x Ex) 2 x 6 + 3 x 5 + 5 x 4 + 3 x 3 + 4 x 2 + x 2 3 2 Ex) 3 x + 4 x + 2 y + 7 y + y
(3 x + 4 y) + (2 x + 5 y) – take away the parentheses 3 x + 4 y + 2 x + 5 y – then add together like terms Answer = 5 x + 9 y (5 x + 2 y) + (2 x + y) – take away the parentheses 5 x + 2 y + 2 x + y – then add together like terms Answer = 7 x + 3 y
(6 x + 9 y) – (x + 2 y) (Remember to change your signs) 6 x + 9 y - x - 2 y (Put together like terms) Answer = 5 x + 7 y (2 x 2 - 2 x - 3) - (x + 1) (Remember to change your signs) 2 x 2 - 2 x - 3 - x - 1 (Put together like terms) Answer = 2 x 2 - 3 x - 4
Worksheet – do these problems, and then check your answers at the bottom Click here to practice adding and subtracting polynomials
