Pictorial Method Using pictures/ drawings to help solve problems 4 + 3 = 4 - 3 = Before we do it together, can you solve this problem independently using the pictorial method/ drawings. I will give you 2 -3 min to do this Remember we are adding. . So we need to add more Before we do it together, can you solve this problem independently using the pictorial method/ drawings. I will give you 2 -3 min to do this Remember we are taking away this time. .
Pictorial Method Using pictures/ drawings to help solve problems Here are some simple sums Solve them using the pictorial method (drawing) Make sure you check the symbol (5 min) 6 - 3 = 7 + 3 = 5 - 4 = 8 + 2 =
Concrete Method Using objects to help solve problems 5 + 3 = 5 - 3 = Before we do it together, can you solve this problem independently using objects. I will give you 2 -3 min to do this Remember we are adding. . So we need to add more Before we do it together, can you solve this problem independently using the objects I will give you 2 -3 min to do this Remember we are taking away this time. .
Concrete method Here are some simple sums Solve them using concrete objects Make sure you check the symbol (5 min) 10 - 3 = 4 + 3 = 3 - 3 = 6 + 4 =
Abstract Method Solving problems with the numbers only 10 + 3 = Before we do it together, can you try and solve this problem independently by counting on. I will give you 2 -3 min to do this Remember put the big number in your head and small number in your hand. . then count forward. Use the number line to help you
Abstract Method Solving problems with the numbers only 5 + 4 = 7 + 4 = We will do these together and use the number line to find the answers
Abstract Method Solving problems with the numbers only 10 - 3 = Before we do it together, can you try and solve this problem independently by counting back. I will give you 2 -3 min to do this Remember put the big number in your head and small number in your hand. . then count backwards. Use the number line to help you
Abstract Method Solving problems with the numbers only 5 - 4 = 7 - 4 = We will do these together and use the number line to find the answers
These are the main methods we use to teach children math concepts. When doing math with the children it is important that they are secure in using these methods. As they go into KS 1 and 2 they will be using these strategies to learn more complex math concepts. Please avoid teaching methods that we have not shown on these slides
Extension • Solve word problems. Can they solve it using the three methods we have discussed? • Can they write a matching number sentence? • EG: If I have 6 sweets and then Tia takes 2. How many have I got now? 62= • Extend them to count in 2/5/10 s • Can they solve simple word problems by counting in 2/5/10 s? • Solve 3 part sums (3+2+6=) using pictorial method to support them • Give the adults problems, can they solve them using one of the three methods. • Estimating. Can they make sensible estimates? • Find different ways of making 10 (number bonds)
