Addition and subtraction Fun with Numbers!
Introduction to Addition › Addition is adding two numbers together to make a higher number (e. g. 2+4=6) › One whole number plus another whole number equals a new whole number › Fractions can be added together as well (e. g. ½+1/2=1)
Steps of Addition › Write a problem horizontally _+_ › Write a problem vertically _ +_ › The answer is called a sum (e. g. the sum of 5+5 is 10) Write the first number in a problem Count the second number with the first The total, or sum, is the number made from both numbers

Introduction to Subtraction › The opposite of addition › Subtraction is taking away a certain amount from a larger amount (e. g. 10 -5=5) › fractions can also be subtracted from each other (e. g. 1 -1/2=1/2)
Steps to Subtraction › to subtract one number from another the larger number must be placed first (e. g. 12 -6=6) › Sometimes “Borrowing” needs to be used (add a one to the right-hand column and take one away from the left-hand column) › Can be written both horizontally and vertically, like addition Write larger number Subtract smaller number by counting backwards The total, or difference, is the number left over after subtracting
