AMERICAN DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) • Passed July 26 th 1990 • Protects civil rights of individuals with disabilities • Title I- Employment • Title II- State and Local Governments • Title III- Public Accommodations • Title IV- Telecommunications Relay Services
APPLYING ADA LAWS IN THE CLASSROOM • Assure that students with disabilities are accommodated so that they can participate in activities inside as well as outside of the classroom • Allow all students equal access to activities or items in school • Provide student’s who have disabilities with resources best suited for them
INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (IDEA) • Provides the right to education for all individuals with disabilities • Removed children with disabilities from institutions • Most students with disabilities receive education in classrooms • Dramatic improvement in technology that supports living/ learning
APPLYING IDEA LAWS IN THE CLASSROOM • Provides students who are blind with computers that allow their writing to be converted into speech • Ensures that accommodations are made for students with hearing impairments Ex. Hearing aids • Allows students with disabilities to learn in a normal classroom setting • Provides technology to assist students with disabilities
ATA LAWS • First passed as the Technology-Related Assistance act in 1988 and then modified in 1994, 1998, and 2004 • Purpose is to promote awareness as well as access to assistive technology devices and services • Provides assistive technology to individuals with disabilities so that they are able to be educated, employed and live their day to day lives normally
APPLYING ATA LAWS IN THE CLASSROOM • Ensure that student’s with disabilities have access to computers with adaptive technology • Individuals with low vision can see better with a screen enlarger on the computer • Blind individuals can use speech output on the computer • Individuals with speech or hearing impairments can communicate through their computers
