Glossary Task analysis- process of breaking a skill down into smaller, more manageable components Chaining- method of teaching a behavior using behavior chains. Behavior chains are sequences of individual behaviors that when linked together form a terminal behavior Forward chaining- method in teaching a chain in which the first step is taught until mastery and the remaining steps are prompted Backward chaining- method in teaching a chain in which the last step is taught until mastery and the beginning steps are prompted Total Task Analysis- method in which you teach the complete behavior chain one step after another until mastery of the whole chain Isolation- method in which you teach one part of the chain in isolation from the chaining sequence
Task Analysis Process of breaking a complex skill or series of behavior into smaller, teachable units.
When do we use a Task Analysis? When we plan to teach skills that require several steps to be performed in a certain order (chained behaviors) such as telling time, tying shoes, or doing long division, as well as larger more complex tasks (e. g. preparing and serving a meal, or cleaning a cafeteria). When there are multiple behaviors that have to be exhibited to complete an action, task, or activity.
What do we use to teach a Task Analysis? Chaining – This is a strategy that we use to teach a series of behaviors that occur in a specific order following the presence of a stimulus. How do we implement chaining procedures? Forward chaining Backward chaining Total task presentation Isolation
Forward Chaining A method in teaching a chain in which the first step is taught until mastery and the remaining steps are prompted. Once child has mastered the first step, the second step in the chain is taught simultaneously until mastery and remaining steps are prompted, and so on. Backward Chaining Teaches the last step in the chain until step is mastered, remaining steps are prompted. Once the last step is mastered, then last and second to last are taught together remaining steps are prompted. This is done until all steps have met mastery criteria. Total Task Analysis Entire chain is taught simultaneously. Each step will be completed at the time of the chain and prompts will be provided for each step individually as needed. Definition: https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=L 4 zll. ADc 4 f. I
